The Health Department’s report for the past week concerning the Canterbury and West Coast Health Districts discloses that infectious diseases totalled 28, as follows:—Canterbury: Scarlet fever 10, diphtheria 2. tuberculosis 8, pneumonia 1, pneumonic influenza 1, puerperal sepsis 2, septic abortion 2, hydatids 1; West Coast: Pneumonia 1. There were four deaths in the Canterbury district, three of tuperculosis, dnd one of puerperal sepsis. The inquest concerning the death of the late Mrs Martha Isobel Toohey, will be resumed on September 9. Deceased died at the Grey River Hospital on July 7th. The “Waipa Post” paper office was gutted by fire at To Awamutu at an early hour yesterday morning, two linotype machines, a big Miehle Press, two folding machines and other equipment of a well appointed newspaper works were completely ruined, while one of the editorial rooms, housing a large quantity of records, was also gutted. At Blackmun’s Hill, Blackball, on Thursday last, the lc ml Bath Committee held a children s “movie” ball, in aid of the Bath Fund, when Miss L. Campbell’s orchestra supplied the dance music. There was a large crowd of youthful dancers, and they were well supported by their parents, who attended in large numbers. Rare splashes of colour design in the costumes, which were both artistic and original, were a pleasing feature of the evening. The prize of the best-dressed girl and boy was awarded to Bertie Neilson (Colleen Moore) and Stan Naylor (Lon Chaney). The “lucky spot” dance was won by W. Buchanan and McNaughton, and the Monte Carlo Waltz by M. Reynolds and L. Balderstone. Among those present were: Herb Naylor, Jackie Coogan; W. Parsonage, Black Pirate; J. Ashurst. Mexican outlaw; L. Baldfrstone, St. Simon; P. Clarke, bandit; F. Leitch, Jack Tar; W. Richardson, laly; I. Duncan, Ann Pennington; M. Allen, telephone girl; Bill Ashurst, Mary Pickford; E. Clarke, rosebud; J Driscoll, Sheik’s wife; Joe Driscoll, freckles; Don Schafer, cow’boy; Lily Balderstone, Jackie Coogan.
