REEFTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the R.D.11.5. Old Girls’ Basket Ball Club was held in the Band room on Monday evening. The bal a nee-sheet, showing a balance of £l3 6d, was read and adopted. The follow ing officers were elected: —President, Miss Saunders; Vice-Presidents, Messrs J. Patterson, R. Wills, A. E. Worry, Miss Hutton, and Mrs Discaciati; Captain. Miss E. Humphrey; Vice-Captain, Miss S. Phillips; Secretary, Miss E. Mitchell; Committee, the Captain, ViceCaptain, Secretary, and Misses A. Henry and M. Brooks. Mr M. Duncan, of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, is spending his holidays in Reefton. Miss M. Ward, of Arahura, is on a visit‘to Reefton.

The death occurred at the Reef ton Hospital at an early hour on Wednesday morning, after an extended illness, of Mrs Howard, an old and respected resident of the district. The deceased lady was the second daughter of Mrs Slattery, of this town, and had resided here for the greater portion of her life. She was predeceased by her husband about nine years ago, and leaves a family of two girls and one. boy. who have the sympathy of the whole of the district in their sad loss. She also loaves besides her mother, Mrs Slattery, three sisters—Mrs Hussy (Reefton), Mrs A. Beban (Greymouth). Mrs Hickey (Hastings), and two brothers, Messrs James and Patrick Slattery. The funeral takes place on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m., leaving the Sacred Heart Church, where a Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 7 a.m.

A meeting of the Progress League was held on Tuesday evening at eight o’clock. Present:—Messrs J. Pattersen (Chair). J. B. Discaciati, D. Panckhurst, A. M. Carroll, James Pattersen. G. J. Dick, J. Noble, and Lawn. The correspondence from the Minister of Public Works stated he was unable to visit the district before the Session. Th.c Chairman reported obtaining a number of photos of the district, which were being forwarded to Professor Wa 1 ! (Christchurch) for publication. Mr ! Discaciati moved that the Tourist Ofiice of Nelson be written to asking when their officer would visit. Reefton Mr Jas. Pattersen and Mr Dick proposed that the County Council’s attention be drawn to the condition of the bridge across the Maruia River at the Hot, Springs. —Carried. Messrs Discaciati and Pattersen proposed that a further letter be sent to the Minister of Justice respecting the condition of the Police Station, and also to Mr R. P. Hudson, M.P. —Carried. The Chairman reported that the busi ness of renewing Old Age Pensions, etc., had been taken out of the hands of the Clerks of the Courts, and an officer appointed in Greymouth, which was of great inconvenience to Old Age Pensioners. Mr Jas. Pattersen moved that a letter be sent to the Minister in charge of Pensions asking him to revert to the oil system. Seconded by Mr G. Dick, and carried. Messrs Jas. Pattersen and Discaciati proposed that further repr? sentation be made to the, Forestry Department protesting against the increas ed royalties imposed on timber. —Car ried. Messrs Dick and Discaciati pro posed that the Council be asked to establish a recognised rubbish dump and insist on it all being deposited there.—

Carried. Messrs Noble and Panckhurst proposed that the Council’s attention be drawn to the excessive speeding of motor cars in the town area, and they be requested to frame byelaws regulating the speed. —Carried. A meeting of the Tnanguhua County Council was hold at 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday. Present: — Crs. Watson (Chair), O’Regan, Clayton, Blackaddcr Auld, Byrne, and Carroll. Correspond once was dealt with, as follows: —From Reeves and Morgan. Public Trustee, D. Blackadder, notifying sales of properties, and asking for amendment to rolls. —Transfers granted and rolls amended accordingly. From John Dick and Son, T. W. Bannan, R. Rouchi, Lamberton and Lawn, John McElwec and Sons, application for renewal of Slaughterhouse licenses —Application 5 granted on the motion of Mr Auld, seconded by Mr Byrne. From Mines De partment re rent on claim licenses held bv Howell and party. —Received. From Conservator of Forests forwarding schedule of “Fifths” to 31/3/27, £2l 2s. —Received. From Booth Macdonald and Co. re Baker one-man patrol grader. From Alexander Mines, Ltd., asking for use of Council Chambers on sth proximo for the holding of annual meeting of shareholders. — Permission granted. From Reef ton Progress League re the removal of gorse and broom from riverbed at Reef ton. Cr. Carroll moved that the Engineer be instructed to report on the matter to next meeting; seconded by Mr Auld, and carried. From same re road to Alexander Reefs. Cr. Carroll moved that the information required be supplied to the Progress League and Cr. AuTd seconded. —Carried. From Chief Surveyor, Nelson, re the diverting of Boatman’s Creek to its original chan nel in vicinity of Section 245 Block ,X Reefton S.D. From District Engineer Public Works Department, advising that two contracts have been let on Matakitaki Springs Junction Road From Inspector of Mines re Murray Creek Road. The Chairman moved that the Engineer make further appli cation for the grant required; Cr. Car roll seconded. —Carried. From Dr W. A. Conlon asking that footpath in Broadway at new motor garage be con creted on. the usual terms. Crs. Auld and Carroll moved that the request be granted on usual terms. —Carried. From ,T. Moore and others asking that the unformed portion of Times Street be. completed. Cr. Carroll moved that it be referred to Engineer for report; seconded by Cr. Auld and carried. From County Clerk, Westport, forwarding cheque for £54 17s (deducting £8) foi heavy traffic fees. From C. Smith. Ltd., advising their premises, Broad way, are now vacant, and asking foi an adjustment of rates. From County Clerk, Westport, re Conference to deal with the matter of river erosion. Cr Clayton and Cr. Auld proposed that Ibe Council co-operate with the Bullei County respecting the proposed Conference at Reefton, and the Engineer to -supply the necessary data required — Carried. From J. McElwee asking for wire netting crates for river protection referred to the Engineer to ascertain Mr EcMlwee’s requirements.
