HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, June 17. It is understood the motor firm of Messrs T.oohey Bros, are opening a branch at Greymouth and are erecting a garage at the intersection of Guinness and Tarapuhi Streets. Mr. Caldwell, of Greymouth, was a visitor to Hokitika to-day. There was a large attendance at St. Mary’s Club Rooms for this week's euchre tournament. The prize-winners were: First, Mr. J. Feeney, second, Mrs J. Morgan; third, Mr. S. Brooks; fourth Mr. Howard. Rev. J. W. Hayward visits South Westland to-morrow holding services al Hari Hari and Waitaha. Rev. R. M. Ryburn relieves him here.

The local Rugby sub-Union has offered three quarters of the net gate for a mqteh here with the Ashburton reps, and is seeking visits by teams from Golden Bav. the Maoris and Canterbury B. reps. The local Poultry Club is holding a show in August and at a meeting yesterday there was a good attendance, the collectors reporting a good response to an appeal for prizes. It was resolved to hold a cookery section and to ask the Gas Company to arrange if possible for a cookery demonstration.

Next Wednesday a ball in aid of the Westland Hospital is being held at Kokatahi and a large gathering is expected. The Westland Progress League met yesterday evening, there being present: Dr. Teichelmann (President), Messrs W. J. Butler, T. W. Duff, A. G. Pilkington, D. J. Evans, W. E. Richards, J. C. Macfarlane, W. Craw, J. J. Mclntosh, T. W. Bruce. Officers were elected as follows for the ensuing term: President, Dr. Teichelmann (reelected) ; Vice-President, Mr. J. J. McIntosh; Committee, Messrs Wild, Butler Pilkington, Evans, Duff, Bruce, Richards, Macfarlane, Jeffries, Mackay, and Craw; Hon. Secretary, Mr. J. W. Morris. The usual gratuity was voted. Representative on Canterbury Progress League, Mr. W. Goss. It was stated that a second mail to Waitaha would be considered by the PostmasterGeneral. With regard to the charting of the Sounds, it was resolved to ask Captain Bollins ’ opinion in regard to any further marine survey which might be considered necessary. For the conference of Leagues at Christchurch on Tuesday next, it was resolved to include a remit drawing the attention of the Government to the suitability of Westland for aviation landings either at Lake Mahinapua or Seaview Hill. Also' to ask that the Canterbury-West Coast road via Boaley be kept open, for vehicle traffic. Mr. D. J. Evans referred to the proposal emanating from Christchurch for a ‘‘Back to the Coast” movement at Christmas and New Year. It was found that Greymouth was not able to co-operate as it was intended to celebrate the jubilee of the Borough in February. That was of course a special celebration, and in view of the occasion and the assistance given by Greymouth to Hokitika at the time of the Exhibition here, it might be as well to drop any speeL* attrac-

tions at Hokitika at the coming Christmas so as not to clash unduly with the northern town. This was agreed to. The sum of £2/2/- was voted towards the cost of entertaining the Christchurch excursionists when in Hokitika; also a vote of thanks was passed to Mr. D. J. Evans and others who assisted in the entertaining’. The question of advertising the district in a more thorough manner was discussed by the members. It was resolved that the President and Mr. Mclntosh interview the Licensed Victuallers to see what can be contributed towards the advertising. The matter of arranging picture advertising was left with the President, 'Secretary and Mr. Evans. It was resolved that the attention of the Government be called to the ideal landing place which Hokitika affords for a transTasman sea flight. On the motion of Mr. Duffy, it was resolved to keep open the Otira-Springfield road with the object of ultimately having the Waimakariri bridged.

The Progress League’s annual report stated a shortage of funds has hampered the activities of the Committee, and it is hoped the balance of £ll 17s 3d in hand will be considerable augmented this coming year. Little in the way of publicity has been done this year except the distribution of abou T 250 copies of the League’s booklet, (t A Holiday in Westland,” by the way of special advertising, hut it is pleasing, to note from the unprecedented tourist traffic this year, and the crowded excursion trains from Canterbury, that the expenditure incurred in past years is now bearing fruit. At the forthcoming conference of South Island Lea gues the Committee will be represented by Dr. Teichelmann and the Secretary. Repeated application has been made for road access to Lake Ma’hinapua, but so far without success, and the question of a continuous telephone service for the district is again undeconsideration. The Marlborough League’s continued agitation for the completion of the road to the Coast via Tophouse has been supported through out. The balance sheet was read, showing a surplus of £ll/17/3.
