WHEN THE SPEAKER SCORED.
There is something like a boom in open-air oratory just now, says a London paper, and a number of memberfl of Parliament have been addressing big meetings in Hyde Park. The openair speaker requires a ready wit, for all shades of opinion may be represented in his audience, and interruptions, unless properly dealt with, may kill even a good speech.
Mr Lloyd George and Lord Birkenhead are both adepts at repartee, but Rir George Reid, when Premier of New Routh Wales, was responsible for one of the best replies to a foolish interrupter. This man kept shouting;— “You’re two-faced, George! You’re two-faced I ’ ’
Pointing at the man, Sir George said: “My friend over there says I am two-faced. You are not, sir, are you?” “No,\ I’m not!” shouted the interrupter.
“I thought not,” was the reply. “If you had been you’d have left that one at home!”
