GIBRALTER MURDER.
BRITISH LIEUTENANT. SHOOTS COLONEL. LONDON, April 7. Colonel J. Fitzgerald, commanding the Second Battalion of the East Surrey Regiment at Gibraltar, paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room, accompanied by the Adjutant. The latter, on departing, noticed Lieut. Duffield, and asked him why he was there. Duffield said he wished to see the Colonel. The Adjutant obtained permsision, and Duffield entered. Presently shots were heard and the Colonel was found shot in the head. He said: “Ho shot'me. Arrest him,” and died. Duffiield. who admitted his guilt, was arrested and placed in the mental ward. It is understood that he is suffering from delusions. Officers say he had no ill-feeling towards the Colonel, who recently complimented Duffield on his good work.
