HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Interest in the potential wealth of the immediate back country is again engaging the attention of the experienced miners in this district. A party of four Rimu residents are prospecting in the vicinity of the Hokitika Gorge and its tributary, the Amunga, where it is reported that encouraging prospects have been found. zY smaller party have selected the Alt. Camelback district as a likely place to locate a payable reef. All these parties are prospering without assistance from outside sources, and it is hoped that a rich find will rewaid them for their enterprise.

A party of American tourists returned from the Waiho Glacier yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired, and the visitors were delighted with the trip. One of the party, interviewed by your representative, stated that of the many tours in New Zealand. the unanimous opinion of the tourist’s was that the trip from Hokitika to the Glacier was easily the best from a scenic point of view. The other principal tourist resorts were visited, but the much vaunted regions of Rotorua were not mentioned as likely to attract visitors from overseas. The glacial regions of the Waiho were thoroughly explored, and as a result, it is expected that the number of visitors from America next year will constitute a record. It is reported that some of the tourists were combining business with pleasure. The introduction of sufficient capital for the development of our secondary industries would be heartily welcomed on the West Coast, where there are many opportunities awaiting the enterprise of investors. It is pleasing to note that the tourists were well pleased with the accommodation provided on the West Coast, especially in Hokitika.

Fairly large hauls of flounders are being obtained in the vicinity (f the mouth of the Arahura River. Owing to the increased tourist traffic to South West la nd, a regular supply is being forwarded to that quarter to meet the resultant demand.
