CROSSING SMASH.

FOUR KILLED. Three Injured. LIMITED EXPRESS HITS CAR. AUCKLAND, February 24. A shocking accident occurred at Ongarue this evening. Air Mcllroy, a larmer. of Taringamoutu, was driving a car containing his wife and family over a level crossing, when the car was struck by the northbound Daylight Limited express. Mcllroy, his wife, and a baby-in-arms, were killed instantly, and another child died shortly afterwards. Two others of the family, and also a young girl working for the family, were injured. They were taken to the Pe Kuiti Hospital. The girl fractured her arm, and has injuries to the back, but the two children are not seriously hurt. All are suffering from shock. The train was travelling at 25 miles an hour, and the driver did not see the car till on the crossing, which is recognised as a dangerous one. The car was carried 30ft over the cattle stops, and it was smashed to pieces. LAUNCH MERCIA TRAGEDY. AUCKLAND. Feb. 24. A continued search for Air L. Waters of Devonport, who was washed overboard from the launch Mercia, when he drifted ashore at the entrance tc Kaipara Harbour early on Wednesday morning, has proved unsuccessful. It is thought there is little hope r : his returning alive, but the searc) will be kept up. CAR VICTIM. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 24. The death occurred in the Christchurch Hospital on Tuesday night, of David Noel Nelson, aged 11 years, who was injured by being knocked down by a motor car at the corner of Selwyn Street and Lincoln Road at 7 p.m. on Sun da v.

An inquest was opened before Air Lawry, Coroner. The evidence of identification was given by the boy’s father 'Pom Nelson, of 594 Selwyn Street, labourer. He said that he had last seen the boy before the accident at about 6.45 p.m. He had suggested a walk, and went into the house to get his hat. When he came out, he found that th' boy had been hurt. He did not see the accident happen. The inquest was adjourned to allow the police to make further investiga tions.
