BOROUGH AFFAIRS.

iMeeting of Council. The Grevmouth Borough Council met last night,’ the Mayor, Mr W. 11. Parfitt, presiding. There were also present: Crs J. W. Greenslade. J. McGinley. J. B. Kent. H. F. Doogan, R. J. Williams, G. Perotti, J. O’Brien, F. A. Kitchingham. CORRESPONDENCE. From the British Imperial Oil Company proposing a new method of installing their storage tanks in Petrie Avenue, owing to the difficulty occasioned by the presence of water near the ground level. They proposed to place the tanks on a concrete foundation, and to surround them with a brick or concrete wall, the whole to be covered with two feet of earth. This scheme was approved by the Chief Inspector of Explosives.—Referred to th • Engineer and Works Committee with to act. From the Greymouth Harbour Board enclosing plans of Blaketown subdivision. To meet the demand for sections, it was proposed to offer them for lease publicly as soon as the preliminaries were completed.—Referred to the Works Committee and Engineer. From T. G. Kitchingham and t»*i others asking that four street lights be provided in Alarsdon Road between Sawyers Creek and Boddytown. — Referred to Lighting Committee. From the Hon. F. J. Rolleston, Acting Alinister of Railways, acknowledging receipt of the represent.itions of a public meeting of citizens urging the necessity of expediting the GreymouthWestport coastal road. He would bj glad to bear the representations in mind when the matter was considered by the Government. The Hon. Q. J. Anderson wrote advising that the completion of the road would receive consideration. —The lettern were received. DILAPIDATED BUILDINGS. The Engineer reported that the necessary notices had been served on the owners of old buildings reported upon by the Borough Inspector. During a discussion Cr. Williams proposed that dilapidated buildings be placarded with the name of the owners, as was done in England. Cr. Greenslade said that if the owners of buildings did not comply with the Council’s requests, legal steps should be taken to have the structures demolished. Cr. Doogan said he was informed that the old stables in Boundary Street were to be pulled down. WORKS COAIAtITTEE. The Works Committee recommended: That the open drain across Sections 20 and 21 and the corner of Kilgour Road and Winnie Street be piped at au estimated cost of £47. That the Borough Engineer prepare the specification for the re-roofing of the Town Hall in 24 guage G.C. iron, the provision of cast iron water leads outside of building and

taking down of the roof over the tower and replacing of the same’'' by a flat 1 concrete roof, tenders to be called for the job; that the surface drainage of Ida Street be dealt with by means of an open drain, with culvert under Alarsden Road, and discharge into Sawyers Creek at an estimated cost of £5O. That the boiler lying in the gas works yard be disposed of, the price to be not less than £2OO. The report was adopted. The Abattoir Committee recommended the installation of an electric beef hoist and electric lights at the Abattoirs at a total cost of £135. The report was adopted. FINANCE REPORT. The following recommendations in the report .of the Finance Committee were adopted:—That permission be granted to Air W. Hill, architect, under section 380 of the Borough By-laws, to erect offices in Albert Street with a temporary wall of wood and iron at the back thereof. The building will havo a concrete floor and will be lined throughout with fire-proof material; that the Council purchase from Air IL Weenink a strip of land from his Sections, Lots 1. 4,5, 6 and 7, Paroa Road, area 19.2 perches, the price to be £125; that the Enginer prepare an estimate of the cost of the drainage of Milton Road and place the matter before those concerned, including the Railway Department and ascertain what thy are prepared to contribute towards the cost; that hardwood to the value of £lBO be procured for the purpose of repairing the two Alarsden Road bridges; that part of High Street near the Technical School be cleaned up; that the Council purchase festoons of electric lamps for use when required: that Miss Boucher’s claim of £34/7 6 for damages sustained by being accidentally knocked down by one of the Borough horses be paid, and that a letter expressing regret be sent to Aliss Boucher; that the question of Cobden sanitary service be referrd to the Works Committee and Borough Engineer to report on. OUTSTANDING REVENUE. It was decided to impose a 10 per cent penalty upon all rates unpaid on Friday, March 10, at 4 p.m. It was further decided that all outstanding revenue, rents, etc., be sued
