AN UNGRATEFUL OFFENDER.

Requites Magistrate’s Generosity. WITH ANOTHER OFFENCE. Charles Herbert Hughes was charged at the Police Court yesterday before Mr A. Naylor, J.P., with being drunk in the vicinity of Cowper Street on Tuesday afternoon. At a previous sitting of the Court recently when Hughes was fined for being drunk and for refusing to quit licensed premises, Mr Naylor paid the fine imposed on Hughes out of his own pocket, so that Hughes might go to work he was promised at Blackball.

When he appeared yesterday morning Hughes pleaded guilty. He admitted that he had had a few drinks, but said he had sought a quiet spot in which to get over their effects.
