N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS. Girls Make Records. AUCKLAND, January 21. The Now Zealand swimming^championships opened at the Tepid Baths this afternoon. The principal race was the 100yds Ladies’ Championship of New Zealand, which was won by Miss Ena Stocklcy for the third year in succession in the fast time of 67 3-5 secs. A Dominion record was established in the 75yds Intermediate Girls Breaststroke Championship, which was won by Miss M. Rydon (Auckland, and formerly of Hawke’s Bay) in 65 2-5 secs., clipping a second off the prevoius record held by Miss D. Broward, of Christchurch. Miss Sybil Brown (Auckland) equalled Miss L. Coutts ’ record of 32 2-5 sees, in the 50yds Junior Girls’ Championship. Heats of the National 100yds Championship were swum. The results are: — 100yds Ladies’ Championship: First Heat. —M. Jepson (Otago) 1, M. Farquhar (Auckland) 2, P. Page (Auckland) 3. Time 72secs. Second Heat.—J. 801 l (Auckland) 1, K. Miller (Otago) 2, E. Stocklcy (Auckland) 3. Time 71 3-5 secs. Final—E. Stocklcy 1, J. Bell 2, Al. Jepson 3. Timo 67 3-5 secs. The six competitors got away to a perfect start, and they covered the first lap in almost a straight line. The first turn saw the swimmers still together, with the exception of Miss Page, who was some feet away. Miss Farquhar went slightly ahead over the second lap, but was beaten to the turn ' at 66 2-3yds by Miss Stocklcy, who j was closely followed by Miss Jepson. Miss Stocklcy made a bad turn, but she made up the leeway over the final lap. and won by a good yard. Miss Bell swam strongly to second place, with Miss Jepson a touch away. Miss Farquhar was fourthj Miss Miller fifth, and Miss Page last. 100yds National Championship. First Heat.—A. D. Adamson (Auckland) 1; N. S. Batchelor (Wellington) 2, Fairgray (Auckland) 3. Anderson (Wanganui) 3, The four starters went down the first lap in close company, Aliss Rydon leading from Aliss Broward. The leaders turned together ar 66 2-3 yards, and Aliss Rydon drew out to win by a touch. Aliss Broward was one yard ahead of Aliss Anderson, who beat Miss Broadhead by a foot. Time 65 2-5 secs. This was one second faster than the New Zealand record, hold by Aliss Broward. 50yds Junior Girls’ Championship. First Heat.—Sybil Brown (Auckland) 1, L. Howarth (Wanganui) 2, Al. Rodgers (South Canterbury) 3. Won by a touch. Time 32 2-5 secs., equalling Aliss L. Coutts’ New Zealand recrod. Second Heat.—N. Coutts (Auckland) 1, V. Berry (Canterbury) 2, J. Brewer (South Canterbury) 3. Won by a touch. Time 36 2-5 secs. Final.—Aliss Brown 1, Aliss Howarth 2 U Misses Coutts and Berry a dead heat 3. Time 33 secs. Aliss Brown always had a slight advantage, and won by a good five yards; two yards separating the next. MORE RECORDS BROKEN. AUCKLAND, January 23. Four New Zealand records were broken, and one was equalled at the first session of the swimming championships at the Tepid Baths on Saturday afternoon, and in the evening, the champion 15-year-old mile record was lowered by 62 1-5 secs to 23 mins 36 4-5 secs, by the Canterbury champion, D. P. Lindsay, who also passed the 880yds in the record-breaking time of llmins 40 secs. Recently he lowered the 880yds record to 11 mins 54 3-5 secs. Gordon Bridson won the Intermediate [Boys’ 220yds Championship, in 2 mins i 35 secs., and broke Cunnold’s record ' by three seconds; while Leslie Olds (Otago), aged 12, reduced the 100yds Junior Boys’ record by 1 1-5 secs to G<s 3-5 secs. Swimming in the 75yds Intermediate (Girls’ Breaststroke Championship, Aliss Al. Rydon (Auckland) lowered the record by one second to 65 2-5 secs, and in her heat of the 50yds Junior Girls’ Championship, Sybil Brown equalled Aliss L. Coutts’ record of 32 2-5 secs. MELBOURNE, Jan. 22. The Amateur Swimming Union of Australia decided to accept the Japanese invitation to send a team of five swimmers to tour Japan in August next. It was also decided to let lapse the invitation of the New Zealand Swimming Association to Misses Couldwell and Robertson to tour New Zealand owing to the inability of Miss Couldwell to make the trip this year.
