HOKITIKA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent). WESTLAND HOSPITAL Ho A RD. The Board met at 8 p.m. on Monday night. Present: Messrs J. J. Breeze (Cnairman), E. Wells, G. Davidson, W. Jeffries, R. Meharry, and A. Spiers. The Chairman moved a motion of sympathy in connection with the death of the late G. H. Blank, a former member. It was seconded by Mr Wells and carried in silence, members standing. The Chairman reported that Dr Vai entine had made an official vi-it Io Westland Hospital and had promised a fcubsidy of £250 towards clearing the remaining rough grounds at the Hospital. Mr Jeffries announced that the Board proposed spending £5OO in preparing the remainirig ground at the institution and that this would be the last substantial amount on capital expenditure. Air Davidson in support of this policy said that the ground -was showing a profitable return on expenditure, there being at present a splendid crop of outs.
Air Meharry supported the proposal. 1 A letter -was received from Dr Vai- 1 entine stating that the Hokitika Bor- 4 ough Council w'ould be entitled to an- 1 other member next election. 'The Hospital Department wrote with reference to enforcement of the Maintenance Act from Alaori patients. A report of Dr Blackmore on saniitorium forwarded by Dr Valentine, was received. The Hospital Board’s Association notified that the Annual Conference would be held in Afarch ami enclosed agenda paper. The letter Mas receiv nd, ami consideration deferred. Mr S. Bassett reported on stretchers for South Westland recommending one with slight improvements, it was resolved to procure a stretcher, prices to be obtained for same. A vote of thanks to Messrs Basset’ and Evans for their report was carrie.i. The tender of Andrews Bros for the supply of meat for the Hospital £438 8s 6HI, was accepted, other tenders being Berry and Son £SH» |l3s B?.d, Johnston and Woolhouse £513 16s 7d. i The Surgeon Superintendent report ( ' ed that the patients in the Hospital on December .“>1 totalled 23 males, 13 fe-f mules; admissions during December total 29, total treated during month <T>; discharged cured 17 males 10 females; 1 iclieved 2 females; died 2 males: toiai total discharged 19 males 10 females. The report was reeieved. The House Committee reported that 1 the conditions at the Hospital were sal isfactory. The doorkeeper, the late Mr. ' R. McKenzie had died during the month
and it was reeomended that no appointment be made and that printed notice.-: be put up in connection with visiting days. The report was received and adopted. Mr. Davidson reported on a visit to the nurses’ cottage at Waiho suggesting that the grounds be cleaned of second growth and that a telephone be connected with the party line instead of through the bureau at Waiho. llie icport was received and adopted. M”. Davidson moved that no enter tainment in aid of the Hospital be held in the future without the concent, of the Board to the proposal. Seconded be Mr. Wells and carried. It was further agrecd that a letter lie written to the Secretary of a recent entertainment as-| king for' a balance sheet io be submitted forthwith. Accounts amounting to £462 Ids 9< were passed for payment. The Treasurer 1 reported receipts £9(16 3s 10d„ payment £926. Ss. 2d. debt balance £9l. ISs. 4d. Received. The Board rose at 9. 30. P.M. The following will represent, the Hoki tika Bowling Club in n 4-rink team to play 1 Greymouth for the Reynolds’ LadAdams, Benjamin, Bruce. Braddin. Cooke. Hayward, Hoffman, King A King. J. Moore, Stevenson, Scmdlz Sher man. Thompson, Ward and YVilson Hokitika are the present holders of the Badges. Mr. G. Howe left by this morning’s express on a business trip to the -Xortli Island.
