(Our Own Correspondent.) WESTPORT, July 22. For once Westport seems to have struck luck. The Union Steam Ship Company having decided to put up freight by thirteen and one third on timber shipped from N.S. Wales after August Ist, which means about 2/-, per hundred superficial feet. If we had delayed th'e hydro-electric busi-, ness and were wanting hardwood poles now, it would have meant a greater cost. No doubt this rise will set the authorities where installations are to take place experimenting upon reinforced concrete poles.

Tenders were submitted to the Hospital Board on Tuesday for the construction of 800 yards of asphalting at the Old People’s Home. They were as follows: S. Sherlock £93 10/-; A. Vincent £75;, G. Snow, £76; J. McGreevy £7l for 700 yards. (This tender was declared informal). A proposition that Vincent’s tender be accepted was carried. Mr Griffiths moved an amendment that Snow’s be accepted, but there was no seconder,.

The Buller Hospital Board held their monthly meeting on Tuesday. Messrs C. N. Greenland (chair), J. Griffiths. E. R. Fox, R. Hawes, M. McLean, J. 11. Powell and W. Caldwell; also Dr Foote attending. The various Coni mittee reports were read and confirm ed. In relation to a communication from Nelson Hospital Board, offering reciprocal treatment to Duller patients for that extended to Nelson patients, was adopted, upon trial for 12 months. Dr. Foote stating that Nelson had an tip-rc cate hospital and many, especially chronic cases might take al'mutpge of the arrangement, and Buller would be on a win. A request by Stockton Medical Association for an allowance upon an account, was held over until next meeting. The Asso ciation reminded the. Board that the mine had little work doing for a time. Mr McLean, from Karamea, wanted to know how the cookies got on when the cows were not milking. They had to pay. Mr Hawes pleidcd that fo; two years the miners only worked three davs a fortnight.

The Borough Council wrote approving the estimates and appreciating the efforts of all and sundry in bringing about a satisfactory position. The Millerton Medical Association forwarded account and asked for a re bate, but the Board could not comply with the request. An account was for warded from Otago Hospital Board for £52 6/3. It was agreed to offer £3O in settlement,. The Secretary was instructed to write the ex-patients and endeavour to secure payment, and to take any stops necessary to recover same.

The Hospital Board’s Association re lied upon legal position of tenure of office of Chairman and also upon question of superannuation. The Nurses and Midwives’ Registration Board approved of Denniston and Buller hospitals as training schools. An account from South Canterbury Hospital Board was referred to the Board’s solicitor. Dr Foote reported for the month 16 males and 13 females admitted, 14 males and 17 females discharged, I male died. There were 22 males and 15 females remaining at the end ot the month.

The Master of the Old People’s Home reported 3 admissions and 3 deaths; remaining in the Home 15 males and 4 females. The poultry produced eggs valued at £lO 8/- for the month. Mr Head required 250 feet of timber for fencing. This was agreed to, also the employment of a man foi one week. The appointment of Dr. Barraclough medical officer at Karamea was ’ ap'jiiaveck Cyclone wire is to be used for the. fence at the Nurses' Home. Messrs Fox and Griffiths were appointed a visiting committee for the month.

i The Peter Dawson Cup arrived in Westport on Wednesday a little before 2 p.m., accompanied by a lot of good humoured Soccerites. Bill Blair was at Methven's corner awaiting them, also his Worship the Mayor and a host of admirers. His Worship extended a welcome in a few well chosen words, and hoped they would adopt the motto of Great Britain, “What we have, we hold.’’ An expression of regret ..that the team had to leave town so early, and a lively bit of bandinage took place, shortly after which the majority of the team left for the country. On Monday night another mishap occured to the elevated crane No. 60. After lifting about seven or eight waggons, she had to be taken off and another crane substituted. Fortunately little delay resulted. The railway workshops staff are at time of writing busily engaged in remedying the deficit, which it is understood is in connection with the friction or slewing gear of the crane.
