FIRE. DARGAVILLE, July 22. Auroga House, an eleven-roomed loardinghouse, owned by John Bar■arich, was destroyed by fire early this norning. The flames had a good hold when discovered. The Brigade had no •hance of saving the building. No one was living on the promises, which were undergoing alterations. The cause of the fi -e is a mystery. The owner is absent in Auckland. The insurances on the building aro £l4OO and on the contents £5OO. J UVENTTjE IMMIGRATION. PALMERSTON N., July 22. The Governor-General and Lady Alice F< rgusson yesterday officially opened Awapuni Hostel known as the “Girls’ Flock House,’’ where fifteen daughters of deceased British seamen are being grounded in housekeeping and farming pursuits. Hon. E. a w man mentioned the fund had assisted 1.700 disabled 'men and dependents in Britain and the Dominions to the extent of over £50,000, and establish ml Flee’Houses for boys and girls. Another link which the trustees hoped to coinplotwas the bringing out-of the mothers of the young people already in the- Dominion. INFANT TWINS SUFFOCATED. DUNEDIN, July 22. At the inquest on the infant twins Doris and Fay Hollows, found dead in bed at Mosgicl, the verdict was death from asphyxia, the result of mucous accumulation in the ■ air passages. At the inquest on Annabell» Cndzow, married, found dead in a bath at Highcliff, the verdict was asphyxia, the result of drowning. COUNTIES WANT PETROL TAX. WELLINGTON, July 22. The Counties Conference passed the Selwyn remit that a petrol tax be im iposed on motorists for the upkeep of main highways with ('quitable rebates in respect to milking machines, motor boats, etc. One delegate remarked that this was the fairest tax as a man only paid as he used. Another said that the principal objections came from those who used the roads a lot, especially “road hogs.” BANKRUPT ’ S PAYMENT RETURNED. GISBORNE, July 22. The creditors of the bankrupt estate of Robert Kenneth Leviek decided to place matters concerning the bankruptcy in the hands of the Crown Solicitor. At a previous meeting, bank’.rupt, a taxi driver, stated that he had received a cheque for forty pounds and .paid it over in liquidation of a debt. To-day, he admitted the money had been repaid to him, the explanation being that the money was of more use to him than to his creditors. DAIRY CONTROL OPPOSED. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 22. At the annual meeting of suppliers of the Warca and Oxford Road Cooperative dairy factories, yesterday, resolutions were passed protesting against absolute control. Both factories paid out for the past season approximately 21d per pound for butterfat. MOTOR COLLISIONS. AUCKLAND, July 22. A truck owned by F. Spooner, standing in Dominion Road last night, was struck by a motor car driven by L. Brierly in passing, and carried about forty feet; then the car swerved into a telegraph post, the radiator was crumpled and the engine smashed. Brierly was c .t about the head by broken glass and had a miraculous escape from very serious injury. WELLINGTON, July 22. Reserved judgment was given by Mr Page, in the case in which Herbert Innes Dawson sought £lOO special and £2O general damages, against the Coy poration, arising from a collision shortly after midnight on January 23, ‘between his car and a Corporation cart. The Magistrate held that the Council had been negligent. The cart had only one light and it was doubtful it that was alight: also the light was so placed that there cwas no opportunity of seeing it from |e Tear. He assessed the damages at £lO5.
