‘ ‘lt’s a bad strike that does nobody good,” is a remark that might be heard in Galway amongst the queues of people who await their turn to purchase cheap salmon in the pounds bo side the salmon fishery on the Corrib. As a result of the coal strike there is a glut of salmon in Galway, and poor people who have never before enjoyed the luxury of the kingly fish may now purchase it at 1/- per lb. In the ordinary course the fish would be railed daily for transhipment to cross-Chan-nel markets. The cost locally, heretofore, on the rare occasions when sal mon was procurable in Galway, was 2/6 and 3/6 per lb. Catches on the Corrib on an unprecedented scale are reported daily. On Wednesday employees of the fishery, with a drag net, landed 168 salmon, the whole of a school maturing for the upper reaches of the river. The fishermen, too, of which there are a number from many parts of Ireland, England, and Scotland are making unusually big catches, which also find their way to the pounds for disposal.
