HOKITIKA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) The Kokatulii Dairy Coy, who. during lust season used ;Swed/.->h boxes to export their butter to the Home markets, have decided that the forthcoming season’s output will be packed in New Zealand white pine boxes. It is evident the foreign article is not a success. The Spinsters’ Ball, taking place this evening, 1 understand, is an invitation affair. In a small community, this procedure is unnecessary, ns many estimable girls of good character are thereby, let us hope unintentionally, slighted. On future occasions tho promoters might, follow a course more in keeping with tradition. A visitor from the far South of Westland reports that salmon trout are very plentiful in the Southern streams, particularly in the Cascade where the fish can be plainly seen by the hundreds. Considering that the fish were never liberated in these streams, it is more than likely that they have worked south from the Hokitika River. 'Phe burning question of liquid refreshments at the Spinsters’ Bai: which is being held this evening, was amicably settled at a meeting held the other evening. The sweet spirit of compromise prevailing. At the earnest request of an interested matron it was decided that, a cup of ginger pop replace tho more potent spirits. By the way of a. stick, a little drop of claret, will bo added.
