SHIPPING SUBSIDY.
FOR SOUTH ISLAND SIR JOSEPH WARD’S AGITATION DUNEDIN, July 20. A meeting of the Chamber of Oom merce resolved to call a public meeting, and to do everything to strengthen Sir J- Ward’s request for a subsidy in t’Onuectio.'n with the South Island shipping. The Chairman stated that tho present position in figures for the year was that 210 vessels arrived in the North Island with 40,566 passengers, and 16 iu the South Island with 1883 passengers. They were heartily in sympathy with Sir J- Ward’s present re quest for a subsidy. North Island enjoyed only two subsidised services and had enjoyed those 15 or 20 years ago, when the South Island had the main shipping ports. It was, therefore, quite reasonable for the South to ask for assistance now.
