COBDEN PETITION.

To Rejoin County. COUNCIL TO~MAKE INQUIRY. At yesterday’s meeting of the Grey County Council the question of the Cobden Town District reverting back to the county was raised by a petition from Cobden ratepayers, whose plea was based on the apprehension that the Town Board is too difficult a proposition for the residents of Cobden from a financial standpoint. A deputation, consisting of M. Minehan, D. McLeod, and S. Martin, re presenting the Cobden ratepayers, was introduced to the Council by Councillor J. Ryall. The deputation presented a petition from 120 of the ratepayers, representing more than half of the rateable value of the town, requesting that the Council take the town into its jurisdiction again. Mr D. McLeod said that matters were in a bad state, and Jhe Town Board would be unable to carry on Che roads were sadly in need of repair, and, as far as they could see, would always be in that state as long as the Town Board had to deal .with them. Two public meetings had been held in connection with linking up again with the Grey County Council, and the feeling was unanimously in favour of the suggestion. Mr M. Minehan stated that they had thoroughly .canvassed the Town Board district, and had not had a uozen refusals to signing the petition. A suggestion- was made that the County Engineer, Mr John Higgins, should pay a visit of inspection to Cobden, and ascertain how much it would cost to put the roads there in proper order. Mr Higgins, who was present, at once pointed out that it would he a breach of etiquette for one engineer to enter the district of another on such a mission without first obtaining peimission. On the Motion of Robinson and Ogilvie, it was decided to set up a comniittcc consisting of Councillors .U a

nan, Byall, Baybutt, and the County Clerk and Engineer, to make enquiries as to the position, and report to the next meeting of the Council. The deputation thanked the Council for its reception and retired.
