GREY COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting of the f-rey pounty Council was held in the County Chambers yesterday. There were present: Councillors D. Baybutt, (chairman), H. G. Carter, W. Ogilvie. A. Robinson, J. Ryall, P. Donnellan. Mr M. Keating (County Clerk) was also present. Apologies were received from Councillors Blair and Irvine. Mr A. Muir (Kaiata) waited on the Council re a fence across the Rochford road at Kaiata. lie asked that the Council take steps to have the fence removed. The County Clerk stated that he had written to the parties concerned last September, asking that part of the fence be removed and a gate substituted, but evidently no action had been taken. It was thought that the request was not unreasonable, and it was resolved on the motion of Councillors Ryall and Carter to write further to Messrs Ashton and Rochford asking that the fence be removed, or a gate substituted, otherwise the Council would take action. The Treasury wrote advising the following payments: — Goldfields revenue for May, £3l/11/-; fees and fines, £6 11/-; F.fths and Tenths, £329/1/2; timber sales (Forestry) £132/12/8; Mulligan Creek Bridge, £79; Flood damage, £345/10/-; Main Highways, £162; Main Highways, £425/7/6; total £l5ll/13/4. Inward correspondence was as follows:— The Minister of Public Works wrote with reference to transfer of vote of £747 from Ilaupiri Junction road to Lady Lake, Bell Hill road. He would give no guarantee as to whether the amount would be on .next year’s estimates or not.—lt was decided to let the matter stand as it was. The Minister of Public Works wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council’s application for assistance towards the restoration of flood damage, and stating that Council’s request would receive consideration when the estimates were being prepared. The Public Works Department wrote forwarding authority for the expenditure of £748 on Lady Lake to Bell Hill Road.—Received.

From Main Highways Board, with reference to the annua] review of main highways, regretting that the Board is unable to recommend that the Grey-mouth-Westport road be classed as a main highway. —It was decided to again approach the Board pointing out that the road in question is a main highway. From the District Engineer, Public Works Department, Greyniouth with reference to restoration of flood damage on the main highway, stating that that. Board has authorised the expenditure of £525 at Nelson Creek Bridge and for Callaghan ’sj Creek, £230] —RcFrom the County Clerk, Westport, with reference to the purchase of a small car for Traffic Inspector.—lt was made a recommendation to the Local Bodies Conference that a twoseater motor car be purchased for the use of the Traffic Inspector. From Messrs Paterson and McCarthy applying on behalf of T. Mac Neil, of Cobden, for permission to erect a loading bank on Greymouth to Westport Road.—Granted. From Messrs Hannan and Scddon, applying on behalf of the Ngahere Gold Prospecting Co. for a remission of rent to 1/- per acre on Special Dredging Claim No. 7215. —Granted. From same forwarding copy of application by Messrs Waller and England for tram along Greymouth-Ara-tika road.—Granted.

From Messrs Guinness and Kitchingham forwarding correspondence in coninection with application for surrender of residence site license by N. R. White. —Agreed to. From Mr W. Holt, Paroa, asking for permission to lay a J-ineh pipe across road at Paroa.—Granted Subject to the Engineer's conditions being complied with. The Grey Valley and the Rotomanu Farmers’ Unions wrote asking that the • Council reduce the County rate. —In view of the Engineer’s estimates for the year is was impossible to accede to the request. From Rotomanu Farmers’ Union with reference to culvert on road near Gra- , ham Bros.’ property at Rotomanu.— Left in the hands of the Engineer with power to act. From Grey Valley Farmers’ Union asking that the Clarke River Track be put in repair.—The Engineer reported that the work was already in hand From same asking Council to urge upon the Government the necessity for transferring the Hospital levy from local bodies to the Consolidated Fund.— This was referred to the Counties’ Con- ' ference, Councillors pointing out the Council was in favour of the transfer taking place. From Secretary. Rotomanu Farmers’ Union, forwarding petition signed by residents of Rotomanu, Inchbonnie and Poerua asking for the speedy completion of the Grey Valley-Taramakau road.—The Council endorsed the action of the Clerk in forwarding the petition on to the Minister of Public Works. From Punakaiki Farmers’ Union asking the Council to urge the necessity of completing the Greymouth-Westport Coast road, and stating that the Association was sending a deputation to Wellington, and asking the Council to cooperate. —It was resolved to co-operate with the Association in the matter, and Councillor Ryall was appointed to represent the Council. From Mr A. Rothery, Inchbonnie, with reference to road access to his property at Inchbonnie. — Referred to the Engineer to report. From Messrs Duncan and Cotterill, stating that the Inchbonnie Estate Co. have transferred portion of their property to Mr A. Rothery.—Received. From Town Clerk, Runanga, re taking gravel from the Council’s pit at Ten Mile.— Left in the hands of the Engineer. From the Under Secretary, Mines Department, stating that the Hon. Minister of Mines had agreed to the remission, to the extent of 5/- per acre, re rents due by Hohonu Sluicing Co.— Received.

From same forwarding order directing that certain rents be treated as irrecoverable. —Received.
