HOKITIKA NOTES.
(Our Own Correspondent.) The many friends of Mr W. Kearns, of Mananui. will regret to learn that he is at present laid aside with a severely poisoned hand. The many friends of Miss T. Gilooly, whose health has not been good of lute, will regret to learn that she is at present an inmate of the Westland Hospital undergoing medical treatment. The Hokitika railway bridge is at present undergoing a general overhaul. Master T. Rouse, who has been spending a holiday at the Dunedin Exhibition, returned home on Saturday even- ' ing. It is reported that the police seized a number of opossum skins taken out of season at Kanieri last week. Miss E. Ryan and Mr H. Burrows, of Springfield, are visitors to Hokitika and are the guests of Mr and Mrs ILynch, of Beach Street. Trainer Jim Stewart, of G-reymouthfi has taken up his quarters in Hokitika, bringing with him six racehorses. The local track is becoming as popular as Riecarton; there being close on twenty gallopers in work, besides a number oi trotters. , . The business people of Hokitika are ‘at present to be heard complaining oi hard times. The. depressed state oi the sawmilling industry is undoubtedly responsible to a considerable extent for the present slackness in business circles.
