I From Messrs Cotter ami McKenzie, complaining of lhe state ot ro.-id in Boundary Street about their premises, it was moved by Cr Kitchingham and seconded by Cr Groenslnde that the matter be referred to Work.s Committee with power to act. —Carried. An application for a buildiii" permit was received from Mrs Russell, of tuc I’.nrk Hotel, requesting permission to mid to the Hotel. Jr was stated that Mr Williams, the surveyor, had recommended that the application be granted. Crs Kent and I‘erotti moved die granting of the application, subject to an approved plan being deposited with the Council, and the moi lion was carried. | Mr F. Baillie wrote, requesting permission to erect a sign-board over the ! f. otpatli fronting ills business premises. On the motion of the Mayor and | Cr I’erotti, the matter was referred to the Works Committee.
I letter was receiver; from the Cobden Town Board requesting the use of the Borough road roller for the use of levelling the Memorial Bridge. Mr Denton "said he had got in touch with the Cobden Town Board, when it was agreed that the price for use of the roller be £2 a day. His Worship said tint the Railway Department had also asked for the use of the roller. They should not charge tho Railway Department ns that Department was improving the road in the vicinity of the Cobdell Bridge. It was said by Cr Greenslndo that the Borough could liardlv charge the Cobden T .wn Board and not the Railways. Cr Greenslacle moved that the Cobden Town Board be granted the use of the roller without profit f -.r half a day. The motion was carried on being seconded by Cr leiotti. Witli regard to trie letting 01 the roller to the Railway Department, on the motion of Cr McGinley and secouded bv Cr I’erotti, the matter was referred to the Works Committee with I i> >wer to act. ...... , 1 On the motion of His Worship and Cr 11-irker, it was decided to allow the Kunrnra Town Clerk the use of the Borough set of flags ror the forthcoming Kuniara Jubilee. The County Clerk, Greyniouth, wrote with reference to motor lorry regulations in that district. Received. It was decided to send a suitable letter to the delegates of trie conference. WATERWORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The Committee (Crs O’Brien and Ifent) visited the pumping station yesterday, and found the pumps in good c.rder! It was about four years since this had been done last. If carried out now, tho cost would only amount to a few pounds, but if b ft too long, would become rather an expensive job, besides causing much Inconvenience to the citizens. The cost

'i'he report was received and adopted. WORKS COMMITTED REPORT. Owing; to the inclemency of the weather, the maintenance staff had not completed the works mapped out receniiy, though, wentlur permitting, these jobs should not lake long. When hot on the above works, they had been ocrupiud ar \arious maintenance works such as footpaths and road re-, pairs, and generally improving the visibility at lhe dangerous bends on Omoto Roiul and oilier roads. As tin* old obsolete asphalting and other plant lying on the roadside near the Cobden Bridge was of no further use, and was most uns.'ghtiy, the Committee rerommended that it be sold for removal. Gravel for asphalting purposes was urgently required and as the carts were very busy it was advisable that prices be obtained ror the delivery at the Gasworks yard or say 50 to 100 yards of asphalt gravel. The Council’s attention should be drawn to the urgency of haxing the terminal of the overhead bridge at Smith Street slioitened. ' Cr O’Brien moved that tho Railway Department bo got in touch with in order to have provided a footpath in Alexander Terrace and Smith Street, above the Railway Bridg”. Cr Kitchingham seconded tho motion, which was carried. Cr Kit chinghani also moved a similar motion regard.ne Ward Street, which was carried. Cr Kent moved that the Alayor and (. r O’Brien meet the District Traffic Manager and member of the Railway Board on the subject. A draft agreement to be drawn up with the Power Board was referred to the Borough Solicitor, on the motion of llis Worship and Cr McGinley. On the motion of Crs Kitchingham and Grcenslade, the ante of closing the tenders for the electric pumping plant was extended till February 24. llis Worship moved, and Cr McGin-
ley seconded that typewritten reports of the various committees be prepared on lhe afternoons preceding meetings, and that a. co[»y bv nande.l to the press. —Carried. SHOPPING WEEK. With regard to “Shopping Week,” Cr Greenslade moved and Cr Kent seconded that the streets be lit up between the hours of 7.30 and 9 p.m., as well as possible. It would be a tiibute to the tradespeople of the town, and would assist them iiiarerially. Thu motion was carried. LEAKY TAPS. i Cr Greenslade referred to a report in the “Argus’’ regarding leaky taps. Tho Borough, he said, was paying its servants to look after th<* water service, but such work was being carried out unsatisfactorily. lie suggested that a report on things in general be made, so that the matter could be investigated. The Council was losing thousands of pounds annually through, leaky taps. Cr O’Brien supported the remarks ol the previous speaker, saying that there vas a suggestion that the town be partitioned off and the pressure taken, say once or twice n week. It took too long to find tho leaks. He. suggested that the new Engineer investigate the matter. No one at present 'knew the water svstem. BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. 'l'he rubbish dump was being kept in a very much better condition since the present arrangement began. The Inspector had served a notice o:i Mrs A. .Johnston re chimneys on her premjjsps recently destroyed by lire, but •nothing had been done so lhe Inspector had interviewed );r T. Dillon re his sections in Richmond Quay,, also destroyed by fire, and that goutlempn had' informed uim that ho hid made arrangements to have the work done. The Inspector bad also notified Mr C. Kettle, who was agent for tlm Dominion Hotel property, re a very had leak between Bond’s store and the Dominion Hotel, which he had premiaod to have carried out. There was. quite a lot of ragwort growing aroum. the town, particularly on the Borough streets. . , The report was received and auopt- ■ od. ABATTOIR MANAGER’S REPORT. During tho mouth of January, 11 cows. 171 bullocks. 597 lambs, 9 pigs, and 29 calves were put through the Abattoirs, aggregating a total amount of fees £123 4/2. One bullock was condsnjred. _ ....
