WESTPORT NOTES

(Our own Correspondent). The usual summer campers are making preparations for tho coming season at Capo Foulwind, Carters Junction, Utopia Beach, and the North Beach at Westport. Tho north end of Palmerston Street, which has just been thoroughly overhauled, graded, and tarred, is looking suite up to date. The new machinery of the Council is responsible for the good work done to this street, and that at a very reduced cost.

The Hokitika School footballers and baseball players will visit Westport on the 28th inst., to play teams from the Technical High School. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday the case of the Millerton miners was heard in connection with the recent industrial trouble. M hen the West Coast road is completed, the car service will be a very busy one, especially with the tourists coming into the town, —stead of entering into the main street by Bentham Street, it would be much more advantageous for the town of the ears were to come straight down the Esplanade as far as Rintoul Street, and 'inter Palmerston Street from that quarter. A visitor's first impression of a town is always the most lasting, and a very pretty drive along the Esplanade could be made. ' At present, the gorse has got the better of tho bargain, and it would need to be cleared away and the promenade required to be put in order. This Esplanade some years ago was made into a lovely garden; trees were planted and the grounds cleared and levelled, and a man was employed to keep the place in order. This was done by the Westport Harbour Board. When Mr R. A. Young was in charge the esplanade was a credit to Westport, but when the Westport Harbour Board was taken over by the Government, Mr T. Wilford being then in charge of the Marine Department, the place fell into decay. The Progress League may take the. matter up and see if it can be arranged to have the road down the esplanade made the entrance to the town.
