When all the- shipping services are normal again, it is estimated that there will be over one thousand sea unemployed at Sydney. Tin sis due to the sale of a number of the Commonwealth line vessels, and to a curt'tdment of local services.

The Commonwealth Line is involved in trouble with the Seamen’s Un on During the voyage of one vessel from London, several oil burners and deck hands .refused -certain duties, and were logged. The Seamen's Union demanded that the logging be cancelled, but the management of tne Lne refused, and when the crew were a'ked to renew their articles, thirty-six men refused to sign on again. A call at the shipping master’s office for men to take their places was unsuccessful. Efforts are now made for the arrangement of a conference between the Line and th e union.

At Lyttelton Magistrate's Court today, seventeen members of the crew of th? steamer Willaston were charged with inpeding the progress of the voyage of the ship by refusing duty The case against the Chief Cook was taken first. The master of the vessel said the crew had behaved well since leaving Home, but they refused to go to- sea because six'men he had to engage in New Zealand wer° receiving a higher rate of wages, anil thev wanted to be placed on the same level. The Cook was convicted and ordered to forfeit seven days pay. Notice of appeal was given. Subsequently a settlement was reached between the Master and men. and th e remaining charges were withdrawn.
