TECHNICAL SCHOOL
HOARD OF GOVERNORS MEET. The monthly meeting of the Greymouth Technical High School Board of Governors was held last night. Present, Mr. T. E. Coates (Chairman) Mrs Carr and Messrs W. Kyle, F. L. Tmley, J. Goodall, W. H. Parfitt, F. H. Kilgour, G. Perotti, \V. F, G. I ullin and Mr. J. Hutton (Director) An apology for absence was received from Mr. Blair. The Finance committee reported a credit balance of £9O 2s Id. The Chairman explained that one of the items on the balance sheer was for a piano, which had been selected for the Board by Sister Mary Anthony, who had gone to considerable trouble in the matter. Sister Ma-y Anthony had refused to entertain the idea of accepting a fee for selecting the piano which was a Chappell, and he felt sure that if she did so, the money would be devotee! to some cliari' tible object. The committee however, had decided to grant a fee. Mr .Turley wanted to know wbv the committee had found it necessary to seek the advice of an outsider when there was a musician in Mr. Perotti on the Board.
Mr, Perotti explained that playing a piano and selecting one wer e total ly different. Mr. Turley then moved that the action of the Committee be endorsed. This was agreed to. Accounts amounting to /?508 13s Id were passed for payment. Grants received amounted to £315 17 s 6d. On behalf of the visiting committee Mr. Turley reported that everything •it the school was found to be in good order.
In the course of his report the Director stated that dur'ng the month it would be necessarx to fill vacancies on the Board created by retirements in accordance with regulations. The position was that the renresentatives are to form an electing ■ommittee which, when convened, will proceed with the election in accordance with the instrueftions of the bodies who have been appointed by hem. Retiring members were eligible for re-election. Mr s Carr congratulated the Director and staff on the very creditable entertainment given by the member! of the Dramatic Club last week. The Director said the entertainment was a striking success. He did not think ’he performers could have risen to the occasion in the manner they did Th e Chairman thanked the members for their courtesy during the vear just closed. DIRECTOR’S REPORT. The following report, submitted by the Director, was adopted:—.Negotiations are in progress to exchange school visits with a Canterbury Secondary school, pupils meeting on the .ports fields and socially. Such an nterchange would be highly beneii"ial /if it were brought about. On Thursday last I visited Reefton where it- is proposed to institute evening classes in shorthand and typewriting >r in any other subject for which there is sufficient demand and for which suitable local arrangements i-an be made. We already conduct Manual Classes on behalf of the Nelson Edu cation Board and we are acting on their behalf in respecit to evening classes.
