TECHNICAL PUPILS

PROPOSED ALTERATION IN FEES. MR. TURLEY 'PROTESTS. At last night’s meeting of the Tech nical School Board of Governors, a circular letter from the Education Department was read regarding tli-i proposed alteration in fees of pupns, so as to- bring about a more uniform charge. Mr. Turley asked if the alteration would mean an increase in tile tees of the. pupils who were attending the night classes. The reply' was that in sonic- instances it- would. Mr. Turley said he was not speaking for th e Greymouth Technical school alone, but lor technical education throughout the Dominion. He was emphatically against the Department charging extra for education. Mr. Hutton, the Director, said a standard was being set for all classes. It was not really an increase. In fact, it was a slight decrease. Mr. Turley: It is an increase for those not securing free places. I am against anything of that sort, and 1 think we should let the Department know we are not in favour of increasing the fees. Mrs Carr: The position of most paving pupils is that they have not been able to secure free places. I don't think we should bother about them. They had a chance to win a free place and it seems to me we should not trouble with them at all. Mr. Turley: I am surprised at you suggesting such a thing as that. Those are the very children we should lake notice, of, and give the chance to. Continuing. Mr. Turley said he would like the Director to make a strong objection to- any' proposed increase at the forthcoming Technical School Board’s conference in Welling ton. A motion to this effect was eventually carried.
