INDIAN WOMEN
WESTERN METHODS ADVOCATED. IMPROVING THEIR STATUS. .CALCUTTA, July 22 Much interest has been aroused in Calcutta by the report of a debate in London at the conference of the British Common wealth of Women concerning the status of women in India. In Calcutta a definite advance has been registered io improving the status of women. Although they are denied the vote for the Legislative Council, women have the municipal franchise. Representative women, when interviewed, said that they felt at present fully represented in the political councils of India. They suggested that the initial line of advance would be to follow Western methods, but later stages would be developed on Eastern lines. They would let light into the Purdah, take up the cause of Indian widows, who at present are doomed to lives of misery and often shame. and improve the conditions cf women s employment and education. A women s association was recently formed in Calcutta with up-country branches. It is believed that .during the next session of till- Bengal Legislative Council another effort will be made to extend the political frStnehise to women.
