BRILLIANT SIGHT

MOVIE BALL

Some Novel Costumes

Rain! Steady and continuous rain. These were . the conditions prevailing last night, but elements that could not have been more unpropitious did ’.tot deter a very large crowd from attending the Movie Mall, instituted by the Swimming Baths Committee, in the Town Hull last night. Not only was the floor uncomfortably crowded with dancers, but the dress circle was packed with interested spectators of the brilliant sight below. 'The many and varied costumes of the dancers who donned fancy dress for the occasion, combined with those of folk who went “as they were’’ presented a picture that was well worth looking at. There were a fairly large number in garb, representing popular scree.i stars, but the major portion of the dancers were in fancy, evening or plain dress. The usual fancy creations, cowboys, Indians, .pierrots, etc., were well represented, but the “movie stars’’ were th e main attraction. It was once written that, as Mahon.met could not go to the mountain the mountain went to Mahonimet, and so, as the people who nightly delight countless thousands on the silver sheet cannot come to Grcyniontli, the people of Greymoufli (or a number of them) have taken it upon themselves, for the nonce, of being those people. And very good representations many of them were. Mr P. Coll, as the Hunchback, was an outstanding figure. The “get up” was remarkably true to th e screen version of Hugo’s great character. This was the outstanding figure in the ball, although the judges failed to distinguish between the merits of Mr Coll and Mr N. Mirfin (Monsieur Beaucaire). The latter was also a very wonderful representation. The following were awarded the prizes:— Best characterisation of movie actress —Miss .Claire Dodson as Norma Talmadge. Best characterisation of movie actor—Mr P. Coll (Hnnchbank); Mr N. Mirfin (Monsieur Beaucaire) equal. Best comic character actress —Miss Marvel 'Warm's (Louise Fazenda). Best Comic character actor—Mr A. Warnes (Larry Semen). Both these characterisations, particularly that of Miss warnes, were distinctly clever, and displayed much thought and attention to detail. During the evening “Quee.i” Dorothy was presented with a beautiful golden bangle, attached to which was the Golden Key, by His Worship the Mayor, and each of the “Princesses” was also the recipient of a golden bangle.

Dr McKay, President of the Baths Committee, thanked all for the assistance they had given, and meted out a splendid word of praise to the ladies responsible for the catering arrangements.

Tlic music wns supplied by YVillinms’ orchestra, and Mr De Freatus acted as M.C.
