A CLEVER THIEF
WELLINGTON, July 27. After being forty days in gao>, a prisoner was feund to be in possession of a gold watch. He had been convicted on a charge of stealing the watch, which had never been produced, and by some means he had evaded all search. He concealed the article in a loaf of bread served out each day Finally a warder noticed something suspicious and found th e watch, RAID ON GAMBLERs. AUCKLAND, July 27. Detectives raided King's billiard saloon, France Street, and arrested the proprietor, Harold James McNeill, and about twenty otfler voting men for allegedly permitting and playing the unlawful game of "Murrumbidgee.
It is played with marbles in a, box. the player getting the highest num,ber thrown \him talking tho pool, less a percentage for the keeper. A search of the premises resulted, rt is alleged in ether betting material being found.
ATTEMPT TO REFLOAT A SCOW
WHAKATANE, July 27
'Hie stranded Fairburn was visited by Captain Hood, representative of the underwriters, on Saturday, to investigate the possibilities of re-float-ing her. As the result of the visit, it was decided to send a tug from Auckland to try to haul the Fairburn off, and if successful to tow her to Auckland. Since the stranding, the Fairburn’s rudder has been carried away.
DANGER, TO PUBLIC
CHRISTCHURCH, July 27
Lewis Downes, 42, labourer, charged this morning with driving a motor ear while drunk, was sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment, Hie Magis irate remarking that the defendant was ai danger to the nublic.
