REEFTON NOTES

(Our own Correspondent)

THE COAL MINES

(Special to the Argus.)

The coal trade around these parts is brisk at present. Sherwood Mino has put more men on, thereby necessitating a Mine Manager. Ferndale Mine Company are doubleshifting their mine, and thch Reefior pit has put three pairs on the dog watch on development work. The manager is giving all the single truckers a turn on this shift. The time cannot com too soon when the wage slaves sh'Jl cut out the dog watch and back-shUts, altogether. A dispute arose at the Reefton p't last week". The back-shift were proceeding to work on the train, when tPe Deputy, in a- peremptory, not to s.'.v domineering, manner, ordered the men out of the van. The men resented the high-handed attitude adopted, u-'d decided lie could have the train an: the mine to himself for the day.

One mine owner here, who employs two men, must have visions of big

profits. He replaced a Union motor lorrv driver with n non-unionist. We see by the cables that the Chin: men are. on strike against th*' enp*' ' ist tyranny, so there is hope for Go-i Own, but I don’t think for the Chin: - men when the big fellows battlesli nuj airplanes are hovering around lb’ harbour against the Chinese sticks : nJ stones., ,
