WESTPORT NOTES.

(Special to the Argus.) WESTPORT, July 27. Great preparations are being made for the visit of the Australian Hockey team. To-morrow night at the The’Te Royal, a grrend ball will be held by the Westport Hoekey Club, and the visitor' will be welcomed at it. Several car-loads of country visitor; who came into the Fire Brigade ball on Friday night last, speak in glowing terms of the enjoyable time they had.

The Westport Trotting Club are making the trotting course ready for the Christmas season. The course has been rolled so as to take out all the small bumps, and also to harden the service .

On Sunday the six-inch water main leading into the baths was turned fail on from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., so as to give the mains a good scouring out. People have been complaining of a horrid taste of the water lately, so if the mains are opened every Sunday when the water is not ■needed for power purposes it should do the water the world of good, helping to clear out any sediment that may lodge in the drains.

The hills surrounding cur town have been lately clad with a lovely whi’e mantle of snow, and the lowlands ha _r ■ received the benefit of a few 'nice spring showers, although the weather has not been cold.

A large crowd of people waited at the local Press offices from 3 p, m. on Saturday to hear the results of tho football match at Blenheim. At half time, when it was reported that no score had been macle, the residents felt delighted, but during the second spell, when the reports were arriving that the barley-thrashers were beating th ■ miners, it was amusing to hear some of the comments.

Tho monthly meeting of the Buller Progress League takes place at the Town Hall to-morrow (Tuesday) night. The reports of the recent Wellington deputation will be submitted to the meeting.

Victoria Square is not in the best of condition for the hockey match tomorrow, on account of the sloppy weather. Air Taylor, foreman of the Goverr.merit Workshops, loaves by the Ixomata on his annual holidays, and, in his uusence, Air A. McGee will take charge, and Air McCormack will b«- i»“ charge of the engine-fitting department.,
