COBDEN HOSPITAL BOARD VACANCY.

(To the Editor). Sir—Be the Hospital Board vacancy, the facts are that in the past, the Rev. Farnell resigned from the Board ci account of removal from the disiric.; the Hospital Board notified the Cobden Town Board of such resignation,* and asked the Board to make an appointment; the remainder of the term of office was four months. Cr Grams, a member of the Town Board, u appointed. Here “Britisher” will see that the Town Board has a precedent On this occasion no notification was received of the vacancy on the Hospital Board, and only on looking up tlicHospital Act, after the last Board meeting, was it discovered that the vacancy had automatically occurred, and such vacancy could lie filled only by appointment. It is unfortunate that five members at present constitute ttie Board, but had the Board known at last meeting that the vacancy c-n the i.ospital Board could be filled only by appointment the business would have been finished there and then, and sa’md me unnecessary limelight and this reply. “Britisher” asks why the haste for a special meeting to deal with this matter, when cue week later the opinion of the electors can be had? f's reason is this: Cr Brailsford ceased automatically to be a member of the t T u.., Board on June 1. Sub-section 3 of Section 21 of the Hospital Act, reads: “If no such appointment is made within two months after the happenings of the vacancy the Governor may, by warrant iwi lor his hand, make the required appointment. Therefore, after July 31, the Town Board will have lost its opportunity. Hence, the special meeting to rescind the resolution referring th,; vacancy to the electors, a».id the Board proceeding to make’the appointment . In conclusion, I do not think that ratepayers will find fault with the Board so long as it is governed by the laxin its procedure. Thanking you, I am,

etc., A. G. GUNN, Chairman, Cobden Town Boar 1 , Cobden, July 27, 1925.
