Miss Au ton, of Cobden, is visiting Christchurch. Mrs G. Wiberg left for Christchurch on Saturday. Miss Costello left on Saturday morning for Welling.on, where sue will in future reside. Mr p. Gray was a passenger by the express on Saturday morning for Christchurch. Mrs Al. Burrell has returned to Cobdea after spending a holiday in Kumara. Miss K. Kerr, of Creymouth, is visiting her sister, Mis W. Yates, of Christchurch. Mr 11. McLaughlin, of Auckland, who arrived in Greymouth on Saturday, is the guest of Air M. Bridge. The Liverpool State coal mine will resume operations to-day, after being several days idle last week. Mrs J. Reid, of Darfield, arrived by the express on Saturday, and is the guest of Airs A, G. Williams, Palmerston. Air and ?.lrs G. W. 1.. Kyngdon left on their return to New Plymouth or Saturday, after spending a holiday with Air and Airs 11. 11. Allison, I Shakespeare Street. The engagement is announced of Aliss E. Rowse, only daughter of Air and Airs 11. Rowse, of Kotuku, a.r I Mr Joseph H. Rowse, eldest son of Air and Airs J. Rowse. Runanga.

An Auckland telegram states that the death occurred on Saturday night of Mr s Maggie Baildon, th e wife of Mr. George Baildon, the Mayor of Auckland after a brief illness. The deceased was 56 years of age.

Air and Airs G. Hardy, of Nelson, are spending a holiday tn Greymouth. Among the passengers to arrive by the express from Christchurch on Saturday afternoon were Air G. Geddis (Wellington) a.id Air nad Mrs Lawrence (Christchurch).

T late Airs Alary Ann Dynes was buried at Karoro cemetery on Saturday morning, a large attendance of relatives and friends being at the graveside. A Requiem Alass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church by the Rev. Fathers AleAlonagle and O'Regan. Air 11. Atway, of Christchurch, arrived in Greymouth on Saturday afternoon. Airs L. G. Wylde, wife of Air L. G. Wylde, formerly of Greymouth, is holding an exhibtition of much interest in the Redfern Gallery, London. Her work includes etchings, pencil drawings, wash, oils and temper, and some remarkably clever effects are shown. Alost striking of all are her oils, and among these are a scene of the Cross of St. Paul’s, Piccadilly Circus at night, and Fleet Street from the ‘‘Daily Telegraph” office.

On Saturday evening, the Brunner Football and Cricket clubs met at the Social Hall, AA allsend, to tender a social to Mr. AV. L. Pattinson, who is to married next month. The Mayor (Mr. T. Williams) pesided, and during the evening presented a leather subcase to Mr. Patterson. A lengthy toast list was honoured, while songs were given by the following:—Messrs Vagg, Roche, Smith, Lambert... Jackson, Kerr and N, Jones.

One of the successful Canterbury exhibitors at the Greymouth Poultry Show was Air A. Henry, of Christchurch, who brought over from Christchurch a fine display of canaries, with which he annexed over a dozen prizes. Mr Henry is a former Greymouth resident, having during his residence here a few years ago been identified prominently with the Rugby football game, first as a player and then as a referee and union official. He was the re-

cipient of numerous congratulations upon his exhibits at the Show.

A largely attended meeting of trie Westland Engine-drivers’ Union was held in the Lyceum Ha", during the afternoon and evening qf Saturday last. The President, Mr. W. Fisher occupied the chair. The Blackball’ Dobson and State Collieries’ Branches were well represented. There was a large amount of routine bu S m„ s transacted. It was decided, by a practically unanimous vote of the members present, that Hie Union is not to Ire represented at the proposed Conference to be held at Reefton on August sth. After consideration of other matters affecting the welfare of the members, the meetiing closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
