The Fire Brigade Ball in the Theatre Royal on Friday night was a great success. The door takings amounted £3l Ils, and a> large number of tickets were sold by the committee. The room was very tastefully decorated, while tli e tables were well laden with dainty refreshments, and several sittings partook of the good things. The Ladies Committee, under the direction of Mrs Oldham, carried out their part of the pro gramme to the entire satisfaction of all present. Mr. Baker filled the position of M.C.. and the music was supplied by Mrs Curtis’s orchestra, which needs no comment. Nearly every round dance was applaucled and had to be repeated. Mrs Irving supplied extras. '1 he grand march was the gent of the evening, and was led off by Fireman Moloney and ex-Cap-ta.n Tyler. Large numbers of country i people mptored into town for this popular ball, and they expressed their praises of the enjoyable even- ■ ittg. Over 200 couples took part in the dancing. On Tuesday night the Australian Hockey team will be entertained at a . ball in the Theatre Royal, and the ; local hockey ladies are making great

A public meeting was held in the Town Hall on Friday night for the

purpose, of deciding on some action for the formation of a Brass Band. Mr. Mcnzie (Mayor) presided, but I the attendance was not very great,

on account of the attractions that evening. About eight bandsmen were present at the meeting. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to form a ‘band.
