The re-election of Earl Haig as President of the Empire Service League and the Prince of Wales as Patron, marked the opening session of the biennial conference here. The appointment of a special committee of ex-serviee men of the Empire to further the migration of British returned soldiers in the Dominions, for settlement of the land, was recommended in a resolution moved by Commander A. P. Hett, and seconded by Sir Andrew Russell (New Zealand). Commander James Drain, of the American Legion, who was introduced by Earl Haig, referred in a speech to the British and United States peoples, stating: “We speak a common language which is beyond the mere sound of words.’’ Premier King, in welcoming the delegates from all over the Empire, urged them to go forward in the labours for preserving peace. They fought to win. Commander Drain, in iiis speech, stated: “You can no more have peace by wishing for it, than vim can change a tiger into a tomcat.’’
