He was a native of Oxford, Canterbury, and 60 years of age, and had been a well-known resident of Kanicri for most of his life. lie was a prominent shot in earlier years and for a long period was a member of riic First Westland Rifles. Of a quiet disposition, ho won a large circle of friends who will sincerely regret his death. He was unmarried, but leaves three sisters (Alr« F. AV. Thompson, of Hokitika, Airs Chas. North, of Grey. mouth,, and AfijSS Alary Martin of Kanicri). The funeral takes place to-

morrow morning There are 700 entries for the Kokntahi Winter Show, which should prove a great success this year. During the past few days there have been some very heavy falls of snow in tho high 'country. The Southern Alps now present a fine picture in their whito mantle of snow, while the ■weather in the lowlands is ideal. Another new sawmill is about to commence operations at Hari Hari, South Westland. The cutting there is entirely white pine, and it will bo transported to the rail-head at Ross by means of a motor lorry. We wish Air H. Lovett every success in his enterprise. For the past ten days a black swan has been noticeable about Hokitika river. The bird has evidently been wounded by pot hunters and is gradually dying of starvation. AAe und n ” stand this species is protected bv law, and we think-it is the duty of the authorities to see to the protection of these graceful birds. The Al ember for Westland, Mr Jas. O’Brien, MIP., has been addressing a verv successful series of meetings in this part of his electorate.
