WINDFALL FOR LABOUR
SUBSTANTIAL CONTRIBUTION TO ELECTION EXPENSES. CHRISTCHURCH, May 11 As a result of a slander action, settied out of Court, Mr R. A. Brooks secretary of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees’ Union and the Bakers’ ami Pastrycooks’ Union, who recently unsuccessfully contested a seat on the City Council, has been awarded £5O damages, which he has handed over to the Labour Representation Commit-
tee to help defray the expenses in connection with the elections. The action was taken against a city business man, who made statements against Mr Brooks, and at Saturday night’s meeting of the Labour Representation Committee a letter was received from Mr Brooks’s solicitor stating that in accordance with Mr. Brooks’s wish the amount of the damages, £5O, was to be handed to the L.R.C. [ A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Brooks for his action.
