CHRISTCHURCH, May 11. Personals. Mr Cyril O’Neill, of Greymouth, is a visitor to Christchurch. Mr P. J. McGrath, of Greymouth, is amongst tthc [West jCoasters visiting Christchurch. Mr J. Arnott, of Grcymouth, is a visitor to Christchurch. Mrs W. H. Parfitt and Miss Marie Parfitt, of Groymouth, arc visitors to Christchurch. Mr A. C. Armstrong, of Groymouth, who has been spending a week in the Sheffield district rabbit shooting, ar rived in Christchurch to-day. To-nioi-row he returns to the country, and leaves for the West Const on ThursMr W. Hanrahan, of Grcymouth, ar rived in Christchurch this afternoon by car from the West Coast. He will return to the West Coast during the week-end.
Mr and Mrs Herbert Moore, of Grcymouth, who have been visiting South Canterbury, are nt present in Christchurch. They will return to the West Coast on Thursday. Mr E. A. J. Wynne, chief electrical engineer of the Railway Department, returned to ’Christchurch from the West Coast on Saturday. , The Competitions. Several West Coasters arc amongst i lie competitors at the Competitions here this year. Miss Doreen Daly, of Greymouth, was amongst the successful ones in the girls’ piano playing section, whilst Mr P. J. McGrath, of Grcymouth, also secured a place in the "locution Mr Cyril O’Neill has so far been unsuccessful in the. latter section, as also has Miss Marie Parlift.
West Coast Footballer Injured. R. Kirwan, an ex-West Coast foot bailer, whilst playing for Marist in their match against Woolston on Saturday, suffered a severe injury io his right arm, being kicked when tackling one of the opposition. Lawyers Rumoured in Trouble. It is rumoured that two Christchurch lawyers are involved in a case which the Collector of Stamp Duties is bringing for failure to pay stamp duty on documents used in connection with land deals. It is stated that a large sum is involved. The charge is a serious one. Land Agent’s License Refused. Objection by the Christchurch Land Agents’ Association against the issue of .a license to Herbert Henry Cook was upheld in the Magistrate’s Court to-day by Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., who said that he did not think Cook
:t fit and proper person to carry on the business of a land agent. The case was before the Court last week, when after hearing lengthy cvideuce, the Magistrate reserved his decision. “I have considered in the interval the whole of the evidence and circumstances connected with this case,” said Mr Widdowson this morning, “and 1 have come to this conclusion, that for the purposes of the Act, and of the application, T am not prepared to hold that the company is unfinancial, but I am of the opinion that the applicant on behalf of the company is not a person to whom I should issue a license. “I do not consider that ho is a tit and proper person to hold a license, and uphold the objection that has been lodged against him. For obvious reasons, I do not wish to go into the reasons for my decision, the obvious reasons being those which I stated at the beginning. ’ ’ Mr Thomas, for the Land Agents’ Association, raised the question of costs for witnesses, and the Magistrate said that he would give final judgment on Thursday.
