NO LEGAL REMEDY
WALSH ISLAND STRIKE. (Received April 25 al 5..5 p.rn.) SYDNEY. April-25. The decision of a suction of the trades unions to declare Walsh Island “black” has had little effect upon tho progress of work at. the dockyards. Yesterday the Minister of Works, Mr Ball, rcccix-ed official notification that there xverc more men at work than on the previous day. Mr Ball stated that no increase, in xvages xvould be given to the strikers. He declared that the men had legal remedy, and they xvould have to abide by the law. A mass meeting of the members of the Unions at the dockyards xvill be held on Monday, xvhen the position of the strikers xvill be fully explained. Yesterday, Mr Pall said that it xvas possible the Government might have to abandon t*ie idea of building a floating dock. The Federal Government had just agreed to a 15,00 p instead of a 13,000-ton dock, and had increased its subsidy from £120,000 to £135,000. 1.1 was extremely unforunatc that the men should carry on like that xvhen it is realised that the Gox'ernnient for some time past had been endeavouring to place llm dockyards on a much better footing than before. During tho past year, nearly a thousand men were employed due to the fact that the Government had endeavoured to find work for them. He understood the men xverc being paid award rates, and. in this connection have no complaint unless they desire by the present methods to obtain more than the. award provides.
