SOUTH AFRICA’S LEAD. CAPETOWN, January 13 Apparently the Royal Mint at Pretoria has been anticipating the Government announcement of a return to the gold standard. Preparations have been made for minting sovereigns on an extensive scale immediately, both to supply the requirements when gold payments are resumed, and in view of orders from mines frbm the mining output, ow ing to the decline in gold premium. OPINION IN BRITAIN. AUCKLAND. January 14. The question of the restoration of the gold standard in England was mentioned to Str George Elliott, who yes terday returned from England. Sir George said prominent bankets in England had said that a return to the gold standard would be made as soon as the pound reached parity with the dollar. This, of course, it had almost done. It had to be remem bered that the carriage of gold would he a costly procedure, and transport would be at the rate of 15 per cent.
