Mr J. D. Gillies, District Engineer, is at present a victim of the ’flu. Inspector W. Mathieson, Greymouth, is at present visiting the Westport Police District. Dr Phillips, Health Inspector, of Christchurch, will return tc Christchurch from trie Coast to-morrow. Mr F. 11. Demon (Town Cly/k) has been confined, to his home with an attack of ’flu. Mr 11. P. Lawry takes up his duties as Stipendiary Magistrate at Westport on September 1. Messrs Cresswell, Mahon and Kitt, arirved iu Greymouth from Reef ton and Westport last night. Air A. AV. McDonnell has been transferred from Reefton to Palmerston North Branch of the National Bank. A Paris cable records the death of Mr Charles Dupuy, who was Premie i of France for five different terms. Among the influenza, victims at Westport are the Buller County Chairman, Air D. Archer, and his wife and family. Air Thomas Kerr, a Granity pioneer resident, aged 87 years, a native of Scotland, died on Saturday, leaving a widow and family. The following were passengers by last night’s express, from Christchurch: Messrs Allan Seeger, Knox, Martin, Burt, Stephens, and Cornish. Messrs D. Tennent, E. J. Rundle, and W. J Butler, representing West Coast interests, are attending the Sawmill Owners’ Conference at Wellington. Air S. R. Evison (publisher of the “Press,” Christchurch) arrived in town by last night’s express on business connected with his paper. Air AV. Me Cubbin, who ws manager of the Alokihinui Football team, recently here, is now confined to bed with the prevailing epidemic. A London cablegram records that the New Zealand vocalist, Aliss Rosina Buckman dislocated her knee and ruptured the tendons while playing tennis.
Air Leo Higgins, of the Magistrate’s Court staff, who has been laid up for the past two weeks with an attack of influenza, is now making progress towards recovery. Air 11. I). AlcKellar, Commissioner of Crown Lands, and Chief Surveyor for Nelson, who is retiring from the Public. Service on July 31, will then have had nearly 43 years’ service. At St. Paul’s Church, Alurchison, on July 18, Air John Alain, junr., of Longford, a returned soldier, was married to Aliss Florence Darlington AVatson, youngest daughter of Air A\’. Watson, of Alurchison. Air F. J. K. Board (Christchurch) who has been visiting friends in AVestport returned to Greymouth on Alonday. He leaves to-dny for Hokitika where he will spend the next few v/eeks. Air AV. R. Kim bell (Under-Secretary for Alines) arrived in Greymouth last night from Christchurch. Air AV. Newten (Conciliation Commissioner) also arrived in town last night. Their visit here is connected with a dispute which the State Coal Miners’ Union is submitting to the Conciliation Council. The death occurred yesterday at Dunedin Hospital of Air Tom Ingram, formerly a well-known Hokitika hair dresser, aged 53 years. He had had a lengthy illness. Tom was a man of quiet, genial disposition, and many friends will regret to learn of his death.. Two of his sisters are residents of Blackball district, while Captain A. Ingram, of the ketch Elsie, Hokitika, is a brother, and his mother also resides at Hokitika. A former well-known Hokitika resident, Airs Alex Kirk, sen., died yesterday at Northcote, Auckland. She leaves a grown-up family of five sons (Alexander and James in AVcllington, William in Tasmania, Charles in Christchurch, and Geralds in Dunedin) and three daughters (Mrs Robertson in Tasmania, Airs Geo. Falla in the North Island, and Airs Goodman at Northcode). Deceased was about 84 years of
