WESTLAND v. MOKIHINUI. FORMEB SCORE A WIN. (By Telegraph—Special to “Argus.”) HOJCITIKA, July 19. The match between the Moki’uinui rep team amd Westland, representatives took place on Cass Square this afternoon in the presence of over 500 spectators, under favourable playing conditions. The visiting team, which included some of Buller’s best men, such as Stuart, O’Brien, and others, was a good one, but it did not get going in time. The local team was not fully representative, several emergencies being engaged, and doing well too.
The game was chiefly a forward one. The home team proved victorious by 14 points to 9, but the scores are not a fair criterion, as the visitors looked in the second half as if they would win.
The local men playuil very well in the first spell, having the best of it, and compiled all their score before half time, when they led by 14 to nil. 'Rhe first score was a brilliant try obtained by Moynihan, who ran from Half-way through the visitors and got across the line. Moynihan scored another try later, while Cunningham, the Kokatahi forward, and Best also got scores for Westland, while N. Wogan converted one try. In the second half the Mokihinui men dominated the game, and, if they had not missed chances, they might have won. O’Brien (three-quarter) and Tunnieliffe scored Tries, while Stuart kicked a penalty goal. The back play of both teams, on the whole was disappointing, but the visiting pack went great guns in the second half. Of the players individually, Moynihan was on the day the best back on the ground, but McKay was always prominent also for Westland, while Palmer also played well, showing good judgment. Of the Westland forwards, the most noticeable were Devaney, Cunningham and Kearns. Of the visitors, O’Brien proved the best back, while Corby and Woolhouse also stood out. S.uart and Tunnieliffe were the most prominent of a good pack. Mr Cutbnsh was referee. The visitors arc being entertained this evening at a dance and leave tomorrow for Greymouth. MOKIHINUI TEAM. The Mokihinui team comprises the following players: —Stuart (3), Bain, Forman, Woolhousc (2), Marris (2), O'Brien, Smith, McCready, McCabe, Stokes, Scott, Ford, Corby (2Tuniiielifl’e, Gleeson, Davies, Closs, Ryan and McCubbin (manager).
NELSON v. GOLDEN BAY. Playing at Takaka- last Saturday, Nelson defeated Golden Bay by 19 points to 12. At half-time Nelson held a big lead, but in the second spell the Bay team played all over Nelson, ami put on 12 points. E. Snow and J. Byrne were absent from the Nelson team, whilst Bay did not place their best team on the field. K. Fitzgerald (Bay), was the best forward on the ground. In the first spell Nelson backs put on a beautiful movement which ended in Wallaee (full-back), scoring. NOTES. “Westport News” says: Local followers of football will be pleased to see that G. Sutart, of Mokihinui, lias been chosen as a member of the South Island team to play in the inter-island match. R. Tunnieliffe, of Karamea, is an emergency forward. Tunnieliffe was certainly worthy of a place in the team and might well have been chosen in preference to some of the men from the larger unions. There is local disappointment that Mouatt was not included in the South Island team, as he is certainly to be regarded as up to rep. standard, being a loose forward equal to practically any other in this island, excepting perhaps Richardson. It is understood the South Island selectors found plenty of forward material available, but a shortage of men for some back positions. Tunnieliffe is stated to have been selected emergency as a hooker. It is understood the next man for the emergency list of the South Island team is Mouatt, Many expect Stuart, of Buller, to play himself into the All Blacks. McKay’s selection as emergency will bo popular in Westland. A witness of Wednesday’s North v. South Canterbury rep game reckons Coast reps would have given either team a good go. It is expected tho South Island forwards will prove at least as good as those of the North. As regards the backs, it remains to be seen hov. I lie South will shape.
