MEAT TRADE.

A MERCHANT’S INVESIGATIONS. COMPETITION FROM AUGEN- ' TINE. [A. and N.Z. Cable Association.] | SYDNEY, October 9. | Hr J. Elder, managing director of! John Cooke and Company, has re-; turned from a visit to England. As , the result of exhaustive enquiries in the meat trade, ho finds that the market has been cleared of old stocks of Australian and New Zealand meat, . which for so long was the main cause ( of severe losses to the trade. Better . quality and better dressed meat, now being unloaded, had also helped to destroy the previous prejudice against Australian meat. In view of these facts, British consumption, which was steadily growing, should materially increase. The most serious compel i-I tor was the Argentine, which had a never-failing supply of excellent cat- j tie. The Argentine companies, by their complete and continuous control of the volume of exports, really de-1 creed the fate of the b-efe trade in the United Kingdom. Australian frozen beef was now of all-round better quality than the Argentine, yet so i much harm had been done to our re- ; putation by the unloading of old j stocks, that prices were generally low-1 er than for the Argentine. The lat- ’ ter’s propaganda was excelent. and well worth copying. The Argentine was also making great strides in supplying the class of mutton best suited to English requirements. A RETAIL STALL. LONDON, October 9. With the object of extending the sale of Australian meat, a stall has been opened at Smithfield market. A leading retailer, in a speech, said that he found a greatly increased demand for Australian frozen beef. Public opinion was much more favourable owing to the improvement in | quality.
