General Mulcahy’s speech on the troops is regarded as foreshadowing the Free State Government’s intention to introduce compulsory military service in Ireland.
A CONFERENCE FAILS. LONDON, October 9. The proposed conference between Nationalists, Sinn Fcincrs and Ulster, at which, it was intended to obtain unity among the Northern Catholics, regarding the policy towards the Ulster oGvcrnment, has broken down owing to the hostility of leading Sinn Fein members of Parliament. EFFORT FOR UNITY CHECKED. LONDON. October 9. Owing to the Sinn Fein Members’ hostility to a proposed conference between the Ulster Nationalists and the Sinn Fe-iners, aiming at the unified attitude towards the Northern Parliament. the project is now broken down.
