WESTPORT NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Crowds of people were on the North Beach on Sunday. There were sports’ parties, and picnic parties, and surfers, into the bargain! The devotees who comprised the latter were members of the fair sex. The United A. and the West port A. ladies’ hockey teams are practicing asfiiduously every morning between 7 and 8 in Victoria Square, in preparation for their great contest on Thursday afternoon. There will probably be a record attendance at the park. Miss Delia Moynihan gave a very enjoyable little fancy dress dance to her pupils in the Orange ilall on Friday night last. The hall was tastefully decorated with shaded lamps, and Japanese lanterns. The pupils were put through some fancy drill exercises, prior to the commencement of the dance programme. In these, some very tiny tots did surprisingly well, and showed as much proficiency as their ciders, who were senior to them by a good many years. In the ball room dances which followed, the little children surprised the grown-ups present by tripping the “light fantastic’’ with as much ease and precision as their elders, who frequent the present-day ballrooms. Mis Elsie Filey, one of Miss Moynihan’s pupils, did an Irish Jig, for which she was given great applause and bowed her response to an encore. The following were among those present: —Masters Moore, Standage, Clery (2), Broad, Naylor, Wilson, Kerr, Maunsell, Filey, Hansen, McWha (2), Archer, Tulloch, Brockett, Atkinson; Misses Mulkm, Stajidage, Langhorn. Newman, Clery. Sloe. Wilson, Sawyers, Fletcher, Woodward. Reynolds, Brown (2), Lovell (2), Filey, McHerron, Upham, Henley, Hansen. McMahon, French, Johnston, Archer. Palmer, Anderson, Tulloch, Mason, Kay, Brockett (2), Chumley, Atkinson and Gear. There were also present Messrs Standage, Lang, Williams (2'». Langhorn, Johnston, Phillips. Mesdames Goldsmith, Brockett, Henley. Meade, Lovell, Fletcher, Reynolds, Hansen. Newman, Sawyers, Mullan, Moore, Filey, Clery, Hendry, Taylor, Johnston, Misses I nwin, Johnston, McLellan, Pitt, Sister Young and Nurse Dennis. At the conclusion of the dance programme an enjoyable supper was served, and the function, which lasted till about 11 p.m., concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.’’ At th-e North Beach Surf Club meeting, held in Hansby’s rooms, on Monday night, Mr T. Ryan (chairman) referred to the sudden death of the late Mrs Tottenham, and said in her demise the organisation had lost the “mother of the club.’’ They had sustained a very big loss indeed, and it would be very difficult to find someone to fill her place. Out of respect to the memory of the deceased, ho asked the meeting to stand in silence, which all present reverently did, and later passed a. motion of condolence with the relatives. Mr W. M. Kerr, secretary, said it was a very odd thing to think that one of the club’s members should die so suddenly. Her heart was right in th-e club’s welfare. In her last hour, the late Mrs Tottenham spoke of the club and the North Beach. Mr Kerr made mention of the wonderful work done by the deceased in the elut interests, and said her loss -was a very great one indeed. She would be ver' much missed by all who were in th* habit of frequenting the North Shore. It would be difficult, to fill her place. The secretary mentioned that a floral tribute ha 1 been placed on the grave of the late Mrs Tottenham, as a token of the club’s remembrance. He also read the following letter of condolence Bent to the relatives of deceased: — “I have to convey to you and yours, on behalf of the members of the Surf Club, their most sincere sympathy and condolence in your recent sad bereavement. It was with profound regret that wo lost our deceased member —one so keen and anxious tor the club s welfare, ever ready to assist in carry inp out its aims and aspirations. For the we express our grateful thanks, an the memory of her will always be cher ished by members of the North Bead Surf Club.’’— (Signed) W. M. Kerr Secretary, N.B.S.C.
