REEFTON NOTES.

INANGAHUA SILVER BAND. (Our Own Correspondent.) The 21st annual meeting of the above Band was held in Friday evening last. There was a fair attendance of the public and Mr R. Wills, President, occupied the chair. The Balance Sheet showed the Band’s finances to be in sound condition. Total receipts for the year wen' £205/4/2 payments £49/6/6. The total assets of the band were shown as £731/12/8, leaving the balance of assets over liabilities £685/10/2. The annual report referred to the lack of enthusiasm amongst the members. This matter caused considerable discussion, during which attention was drawn to the fact that employers of labour in the district give very little consideration to bandsmen. A deputation consisting of Messrs Str.llard, Nicholson, Austin, and Wills was appointed to interview the employers with the object of obtaining employment for bandsmen when possible. Mr Nicholson offered a trophy with tho object of encouraging members to attend practice. Air S. Austin, conductor, intimated that he would not be a candidate for re-election to the position this year. He, however, later offered to continue with the conductorship temporarily until the services of another conductor could bo obtained.

Election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, Air F. B. Stallard, reelected; President, Air R. AVills; Bandmaster, Air J. Goodyer; Deputy, Air AV. Evans; Secretary and Treasurer, Mr J. Goodyer; Committee, Officers of the Band. The election of junior officers was deferred until the Band’s monthly meeting. Thu election of vice-Presidents was left to Messrs AVills, Nicholson and Goodyer. A'otes of thanks were passed to the Press, Racing and Trotting Clubs, the ladies end to Air S. Corrin, Librarian. A vote of thanks to the chair concluded the meeting. FOOTBALL. The annual Rugby match between Greymouth D.H.S. and Reefton D. 11.5. was played on the Racecourse on Saturday, and contrary to expectations resulted in a win for the local boys by 16 points to 5. Both teams are to be congratulated on the splendid display of football. The boys endeavoured to open up tho. game on every possible occasion and some really good passing rushes were tho result. The fielding of both sides was well up to the mark. Air Al. Banks refereed. After tho game the Grey boys were entertained at afternoon tea by the Reefton High School girls. Air Alori welcomed the Grey boys to Reef ton and said that he hoped they had enjoyed the game as much as the i spectators and congratulated them on the display. Air Allison suitably responded. I The Reefton boys arc to meet. AVcsti port D. 11.5. on August 28th, and intend ■ to visit Greymouth and Hokitika early I in September. J Mr AVm. Hynes, who, for the past 14 • years, has followed the occupation of I a miner in this district, leaves to-day for North Queensland where he has obtained a position with a prospecting Syndicate. Air Hynes has been an en--1 thusiastic supporter of the New Zea- ■ land Labour movement and things geni erally pertaining thereto. i Miss Lizzie Carr, who has been spend- ! ing a holiday at Dunullie returned home j last evening. During her stay at Du--1 nollie she was the guest of Airs C. Preston. The .Reefton Hockey girls received a great ovation as they left the train on Saturday evening. The platform was thronged with friends and supporters to convey to them their appreciation of their victory against Blackball. It now looks—according to the number of matches played—that our girls will have the first sip from the beautiful Silver Cup presented by Air A. Brovis.

General regret was freely expressed in sporting circles, when it became known that Aliss Isabel Lockington, had resigned her position, as Sister at the Reefton Hospital, and taken up .i position at the Westport Hospital. During her career as a hockey player, she has proved herself a tower of strength to the local team. Il is the intention of Reefton Hockey girls to entertain her to an At Home. Air Hincksman, the popular traveller for Griffen and Smith, is a visitor to Reef ton on business. Air Archer, representing Berry and Company, is also a visitor to Reefton. The Energetic Mine, which has been floated, with a new company, comprised principally of West. Coast shareholders, is about to resume operations underground. The process of unwatering the mine will commence on Thursday of this week. This will be pleasing news to the commercial interests of our town. 1 understand that Mr Joseph Bolitho, who formerly successfully managed this well-known property, has again been placed in charge of operations at the Mine.
