MOUNT EVEREST.
PROSPECTS OF CONQUEST. [A. and N.Z. Cable Association.] LONDON, July 23. General Bruce, in. a final Mt. Everest. despatch, from the Shekardzong, sums up the lessons of the venture of which the first is that Mt. Everest is climbable but requires better weather than this year. He states:— It is practically certain that a wellchosen team of climbers could ascend a greater height than we did this year, and without oxygen. Improvements to the oxygen apparatus arc possible but we proved that nights are passable at 25,000 feet, without oxygen; also the sudden failure of the oxygen at even greater heights did not cause harm. The real basis of any attempt on Mt. Everest consists of native porters. They performed wonderfully, but are capable of even more, if advantage. is taken of the recent ■experience, and they are properly looked after.
