RUNANGA NOTES.
RUNANGA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. The Rnnanga Horticultural Society held ;> social evening in the Miners’ Hall, Bununga, on Saturday night at which the trophies won during the year were presented. There was a large attendance of horticultural enthusiasts, Ihe chair being t: ken by Mr J. F. Patlinson, Mayor of Runanga. In handing the various trophies won to the recipients he warmly congratulated each of them on their success, which in every case > had been full of merit, owing to the
very fine blooms which hud to be competed against. He hoped, too, that each suci eeding \ car other contestants would put forth their claims for Hie coveted trophies, thus emulating the enthusiasm of the present holders, and also making the < ompet it ions severer and the trophies harder to win. J.le then presented the cups and medals as follows: — Bradbury Daffodil Cup, for best 12 varieties of daffodils: Air -I. Unwin; Ashby Bergh’s Cup for Sweet Peas: —.Mr I. Messop; Ashby Bergh’s Chrysanthemum Cup: Mr J. Alalpss; Medal for most points in chrysanthemum class, ' -Mr I. Malpass; National Medal for j Peas: Mr Thos Nelson (won I two years running) ;Aledal for most points in Summer Show: Mr 11. Sattcrthwaife; Modal for most points Chrysanthemum 1 Show: Mr Sum Unwin. The toast of the ‘‘Horticultural Society- was proposed by Mr R. T. Bush,
of Greyniouth, who congratulated the Society on the high standard it had attained, and hoped that wh:t had already been achieved would be an incentive to higher and widerspread effort. The keenness of the members had resulted in their establishing a reputation for high quality culture which many a much larger society would be proud to have. He wished the same interest. could be instilled in Io Greymouth growers as was in evidence in Runanga, so that the former might be able to meet the latter in competition on mere equal ground, : nd thus give Runanga a harder run for the prizes than they had at present. He wished the Society continued success. The toast was drunk v\ .th enthusiasm, amt responded Io by Messrs Satterthw: 4i‘e and Currie. The ioust of the “Visitors’’ was proposed by Mr T. Currie, who expressed his pleasure at the attendance of Greymouth visitors, and for the interest they had always taken in the Runnnga Society. lie was glad Io testify to the good spirit which prevailed between the Greyniouth Societies and the Runanga Society. By co-operation they could help one another in many ways, especially in furthering horticulture, stimulating greater interest, and reaching a higher standard of perfection. Messrs Milner, Peyman and Bush were called on to respond to the toast. During the evening vocal and elocutionary items were given by Alessrs Halliday, Simpson, Smit hcring, Ishcrwood, Bush, Peyman ami Kinsey, all of which added to the evening’s enturtaiiiment. The whole function was most enjoyable.
The half-yearly meeting of the above Union took place in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Blackball, last evening. A number of Runanga and Greymouth members travelled by car to Blackball to attend the meeting. In the absence of the President, Air J. Ishcrwood (vice-president) took the chair. It was resolved that the General Secretary write to the District Council of the Miners’ Federation urging that a collection be taken up in the State, Blackball and Roa mines for a member of the Union who has been off work for a considerable tinue through sickness. It was decided to protest to the Engine Drivers’ Federation against the practice of allowing uncertificated men to get up steam in boilers which require a certificated engine driver to be in attendance. The action of the Engine Drivers’ Federation in seeking to link up with the Engine Drivers’, Firemen and Cleaners’ Association in a. Power Users’ Federation was unanimously endorsed. It was unanimously resolved that Rule 21 be strictly adhered to in future. Runanga was chosen as the place ol the next annual meeting. It was unanimously resolved that the action of a certain mine manager in not carrying out the verbal understanding of the last conference between the mine owners and the union in regard to members being asked to do work that is usually carried out by members of another union when a dispute exists, be strongly condemned, and that our representatives at next conference be asked to bring the matter before the mine owners’ representatives. The secretary was instructed to write the mine owners with a view of hastening a conference between the union and the owners.
