REEFTON NOTES

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual Anzac Ball, which was held in the Princess Theatre on Friday evening, proved a great success, there being a record assemblage of trippers of the light fantastic. The hall was most tastefully decorated and presented a picturesque appearance. The supper was supplied by the ladies and was everything that could be desired, and the music was supplied by Miss McGillicuddy’s Orchestra, and it added considerably to the evening’s enjoyment. We join in wishing our local sports every success in the. under taking. During the last fortnight eight extra men have been engaged at the Reef ton Coal Companies .Mines, but this does not warrant any persons coming here looking for work. Then is at present a large number of men in the R-eefton district still unemployed, including many married men with families. i Despite the many warnings that have been given that employment in this district is at a prcmimuin, toilers still continue to arrive here in search of work. Air R. Irving, of the N.Z. Railways, Hokitika, is at present at Reefton on a visit to his father, Air \\ . Irving, a member of the Inangaiiua County Council and many other public bodies. Bob, a Reef ton boy, is thoroughly enjoying the hospitality of quite a number of his old school mates. Air John Alanslield Irving, the Manager of the Diggers Football Club, re- . turned to Reefton yesterday and expressed himself indeed very pleased with their trip to Afurchison. Airs John AlcPadden of West port, who has been on a visit to her mother Airs AlcPadden of Reefton, returned home yesterday morning per Newman Bros. car. Airs C. Potter, of Reefton, the wife !of Air J. C. Potter the popular car driver in the employ of Newman. Bros. Alotor Service, left yesterday morning for Westporr, where a. short holiday ■will be spent by her. Sergeant Hyland, Aiessrs Thomas Phillips, (Solicitor of Reefton), J. O’ Regan, AV. Irving (members of the Afotueka Licensing Bench) leave this morning for Afurchison to bo present at the sitting of the court. The business to be transacted is in connection with the granting of new licences. The local Cycle Road Racing Club held another series of their races on Saturday under very unfavourable conditions. A drizzling rain sot in during the morning and continued right through the day, and by the time the race was ready to start, it was nothing but a downpour. The committee called the riders together and asked them if it would be advisable to postpone the race. This they would not hear of, and unanimously decided to ride. By this time a fair crowd had assembled to witness the event, all expressing the opinion that these riders, were sports of the first water to undertake a 14 mile journey, under such conditions. AVright (the scratch man) put up a splendid performance, aovering the distance in 51 minutes 22 seconds, and thus securing Ist prize

and fastest time. C. Crook (.110 50c) filled second ]dac(\ and rode a great race against the champion. The redoubtable “Toby" Dawson (190soes) finished third, and, for a boy, he did well to gain a. position against such riders who were thrieo his weighr. Mon- will be haaril of him next season. The school boys gave him a great reception. R. Thomas (240 secs the fourth man to finish, rode a good race considering it was his first appearance before the public. The committee wish to thank Air C. Barnett, of the “Herald Office,” for his free gift of posters, also Air R. Lahore for placing his bathroom at the disposal of the riders. The next event of interest to attract the attention of sports will be a walking match to be held in about a fortnight’s time, when we trust that record nominations will be secured, The match will be held on a AVednesday afternoon, so as to give everybody an opportunity of contesting the event. The prizes will be a sweepstake, nominations being fixed at 2/6. The Treasurer of the local Rugby Union has been summoned to appear before Air Afeldrum, on Thursday next in connection with Sunday Football matches, that have been held here for many years. The case is exciting a great deal of interest with local sports and the public generally, who aro most strenuously in favour of Sunday football, including both sexes.
