AUCKLAND, June 1. , The weather was cold and wintry at Ellerslie this morning. The bulk of the horses were restricted to steady pacing on the sand, which was the only track available before breakfast. Cold Steel sprinted half a mile in

50secs., a distance which Irapuka covered in 47secs. Strategy and L’Amour covered five furlongs in 1.5. Te Kuri was sent over four furlongs, the last three taking 39sccs. Gladful beat- Birkenella over seven furlongs, the last six taking 1.22 3-5. Miss Gold slipped over four furlongs in 50sccs. Gold Star easily beat Passin’ Through over live furlongs in 1.4 3-5. Hipo sprinted half a mile in 52 secs. Simonides and Voluble, were both tried over the brush, hurdles, and both stopped at the second. Voluble repeatedly refused, but Simonides got over at the second attempt. Royal Abbey jumped eight hurdles in good style. No Surrender was very sore after working this morning. RACING NOTES. The filly Sunbath has been disposed of by Air 11. E. Davis to a Greymouth resident, and was brought to Greymouth on Saturday last, where she will be wintered. Cave Rock is still lame, as the result of striking a hurdle when being schooled on the Reef ton racecourse. It is now definitely stated that Sturdee has gone in a tendon, and he is unlikely to race again. Despite the 9.13 she has been given in the open sprint at Otaki. Kinsem is one of the favourites for the event. Another who is in the market is Civilform. A Hawke’s Bay statement is to the (dfect that the price at which King’s Trumpeter changed bands was one thousand guineas. G. Dixon is the most successful apprcntic-e riding this season. Dixon has ridden 27 winners and one dead heat. Some Kid has boon showing good form on the Riccarton tracks lately, and some have ticked him off as sure to run well next time out. Dissertation, who is to contest the Waukawa Cup at Otaki, has been work ing well on tire tracks, and with her handy weight may carry a fair amount of support. Blairinore, a three year-old half -brother by Kenilworth to Beauford, won .his first race recently, when he secured a six furlong novice handicap at Maillan d. Early favourites for the Raukawa Chip at Otaki. are Tame Fox and Marquetour. That good horse Rouen, who has had '■ an easy time for a while, is in steady work again nt Foxton. Fisher was booked to leave Otaki for Ellerslie early this week. He will be ridden in the Great Northern Steeple* by W. Dowden, who had the mount on the Maniopoto gelding when he won the Great Northern Hurdles last year. Maniahcra is still confined to his box as the result of his fall at Wanganui, and he is not likely to race again until tli<* Wellington mooting. At Ellerslie on Saturday Coalition jumped the s"'l wall, double a,nd stone ■wall, and then after doing strong work, on the sand, jumped the same obstacles again. Ho w-as inclined to lie a bit careless at the double, but otherwise jumped well.

Five furlongs saw' the end of Will j Oakland in his Ashburton races, but at Wingatui he registered a hollow [victory in Hie open six furlong event. | The Finland —TrobeHi gelding has been I a rare bargain and stake-earner for his 1 present owner, and he is certain to bo seen again to advantage in the near ' future. A northern writer states that there are more than 200 horses in work at | Ellerslie at the present time, excluding ' rising two and three-year-olds. This iis convincing cvid-encc that racing is booming in the north, and there need ■ bo little surprise that huge acceptances necessitating divisions arc becoming not unusual in Auckland. Gladful is expected to strip a very fit horse for the Groat Northern Hurdle ' Handicap, a race he won five years ago. 1 Alteration is one of the favourites for the Great Northern Hurdle Ilanj dicap. He is credited with being a bet- | ter horse now than at any previous , stage of his career. j Vagabond fell while being schooled with Gladful at Ellerslie last week, mid tho Martian gelding is an unlikely there seems to I’c a fair amount of difficulty in making Vagabond into an efficient jumper. The strings of horses which Mr YV. R. Kemball, the well-known racing owner sends to various race meetings are always accompanied by his own farrier. Like .some other owners (says the “Wairarapa Age”), Air Kemball finds that the shoeing done by the outside farrier is often unsatisfactory and (his is a matter which is the highest importance in successful racing. Now that the New Zealand Cup is confined to horses that have done 4.31 , or better, the following horses are still eligible:—Alatchlight (4. 26 1-5), Albert Cling (4.26 2-5), Box Scat (1.27), Alan o’ War (‘l-27 3-5), General Link (4.27 3-5), Agathos (4.25), Reta Deter (4.28 2-5), Oinako (4.28 3-5), Realm (Aus. 4.29), Vice Admiral (4.29 3-5), Cello Sydney Wilkes (4.29), Sherwood (4.29). Dean Dillon (4.29 .1-5), Locanda Dillon (4.29 2-5), Whispering Wil- , lie (4.29 2-5), Tatsy Dillon (4. 29 2-5) 1 Willie Lincoln (4.29 2-5), John Dillon (4.29 4 5), Vilo (4.29 4-5), Trix Pointer (4.39), Gold Boy (4.30 2-5), Gleaming (4. 30 3-5), All Bell (4.31), Nita Bell (4-31). Aloneymaker (4.31) and Rangitata Lass (4.31).
