VALEDICTORY.

On Monday evening, prior to his departure for Auckland (yesterday), Air Frank Doogan was farewelled by a numerous gathering of his friends at the Recreation Hotel, Air E. I. Lord presiding. There were apologies for absence from Alessrs T. Campbell, E. AleDonnell, Chcstermnn, 11. McKcowcn, 11. 11. Smith, G. 11. Webster, T. O’Callaghan, F. Johnston, J. AV. Greenslade, C. 11. Rose and others. A first-class spread was provided by Host and Hostess Lees, and full justice was done to it. Air Doogan was presented by the chairman on behalf of his friends, with a fountain pen and pocket wallet, and several speakers paid a high tribute to the good qualities of the guest, referring especially to his oratorical and literary ability. All wished him success in his pursuit of better health in the sunny north, feeling confident he would not forget the many friends ho was leaving behind on the Coast. The speakers included Alessrs T. Barry (president of St. Columba Club), Al. Keating (treasurer of the Competitions Society), Cr K. Skoglund, Alessrs J. Af. Stanley (Greymouth ‘‘Star’’), V. Fraser, J. AlcGrath (‘‘Argus’’), and Jas. Kennedy. The guest was honoured musically on rising to reply, and thanked them all for their eulogies, which he did not deserve. His competition success was due to hard work, and in the literary sphere he wrote as a er and would continue to do so. Vari- : -*n] and elocutionary items w’ere given during the evening bv XV.
