FALLING BIRTH RATE.

25 PER CENT. IN WELLINGTON. (Per Press WELLINGTON, May 2. The vital statistics for Greater Wellington for April appear to indicate a fall in the birth rate of about 25 per cent, compared with the figures for the previous months, and also the monthly averages for past years. For the period stated there were only .149 births, as against 206 for March of this year, and 208 for April of 1921. The deaths numbered 76 and the marriages 108— almost the monthly average. Dr Truby King says that the birthrate, not only in Wellington, but all over New Zealand, is going steadily down. It dropped from 24 per 1000 in 1917 to 21 in 1921. It was 35 in 1885. The birthrate should be 30 per 1000.
